AIIMS Bhopal has taken a significant step toward advancing future-ready healthcare by partnering with Erasmus Medical Center, Rotterdam, The Netherlands. Through this collaboration, both institutions will jointly pursue cutting-edge research in pharmacogenomics, the science that examines how genetic variations influence an individual’s response to medicines.
This partnership aims to strengthen academic exchange while promoting innovative research that could transform the way treatments are prescribed.
Towards Personalised and Safer Treatments
As reported by TOI, the collaboration focuses on improving personalised medicine. Instead of following a one-size-fits-all approach to treatment, researchers will explore how genetic testing can help doctors identify the most effective drug for each patient.
As a result, this approach may lead to safer prescriptions, reduced side effects, and faster recovery for patients. By tailoring therapies according to genetic profiles, the initiative could significantly improve treatment outcomes and patient safety.
Evaluating Clinical and Economic Impact
In addition, the research project will assess the scalability, clinical utility, and health-economic impact of pharmacogenomic applications. The goal is not only to improve clinical outcomes but also to make treatments more cost-effective and accessible within healthcare systems.
Through these evaluations, the project seeks to create a sustainable framework for integrating precision medicine into routine clinical practice.
High-Level Delegation Strengthens Academic Ties
Recently, a high-level delegation from Erasmus Medical Center visited AIIMS Bhopal to formalise the collaboration. The delegation was led by Prof. Peter J. van der Spek, Head of Clinical Bioinformatics at Erasmus Medical Center.
During the visit, the team met Dr. Madhabananda Kar, Director of AIIMS Bhopal, and presented a Letter of Intent to strengthen academic cooperation between the two institutions.
Major Research Project Led by AIIMS Bhopal
The proposed research initiative, valued at over ₹10 crores, will be spearheaded by Dr. Shubham Atal, Additional Professor in the Department of Pharmacology at AIIMS Bhopal. He will lead the project as the Principal Investigator, guiding the research and coordinating collaborative efforts between both institutions.
Building the Future of Precision Medicine
Welcoming the collaboration, Prof. (Dr.) Madhabananda Kar expressed optimism about the initiative and its potential to advance medical research. Similarly, Prof. Peter J. van der Spek emphasised the importance of building a strong Indo–Dutch partnership in precision medicine.
Together, the institutions aim to drive innovation in pharmacogenomics and contribute to the development of more precise, effective, and patient-centred healthcare solutions.
