After two consecutive second-trimester pregnancy losses and a failed vaginal cerclage, doctors at KIMS Cuddles, Secunderabad, used laparoscopic trans-abdominal cerclage to help the woman carry her third pregnancy to term.
Doctors at KIMS Cuddles, Secunderabad, successfully managed a high-risk pregnancy in a woman with a history of two consecutive second-trimester losses, helping her deliver a healthy baby boy.
The woman lost her first pregnancy at 16 weeks and her second at 18 weeks despite undergoing a conventional McDonald cerclage during her second pregnancy. Therefore, during her third pregnancy, doctors opted for a laparoscopic trans-abdominal cerclage (TAC) at 14 weeks.
A Stronger Support for the Cervix
Dr N. Bindu Priya, Senior Consultant and Lead Urogynaecologist, performed the procedure along with Dr Sindhura and Dr Sai Snehitha. The team placed the suture at the junction of the uterus and cervix to provide stronger support and prevent premature opening.
As per the press release, the patient had cervical insufficiency, a condition in which a weakened cervix may open prematurely during pregnancy, leading to second-trimester miscarriage or extremely preterm delivery.
Successful Pregnancy Outcome
Doctors closely monitored the patient after the procedure. She subsequently carried her pregnancy to full term and delivered a healthy baby boy.
Dr Bindu Priya said trans-abdominal cerclage can benefit carefully selected women with recurrent second-trimester losses, particularly after the failure of a previous vaginal cerclage.
Importance of Early Specialist Care
The doctors advised women with repeated pregnancy losses, especially during the second trimester, to seek specialist consultation early in subsequent pregnancies. Timely evaluation and individualised treatment can help improve the chances of a successful pregnancy.
