AIIMS Bilaspur Paves Way for Himachal’s Self-Reliance in Healthcare

AIIMS Bilaspur is transforming healthcare delivery in Himachal Pradesh by treating over 30,000 patients every month. Since its inception less than three years ago, the institute has expanded its inpatient capacity from 690 to 728 beds, and currently manages more than 1,500 patients daily, with over 4,000 monthly indoor admissions.

Milestone Achievement: First Kidney Transplant

As reported by newkerala, the institute marked a clinical breakthrough by successfully performing its first kidney transplant, adding to its growing list of medical achievements.

Boost in Emergency Preparedness

AIIMS Bilaspur has significantly enhanced its emergency care capabilities. It is now equipped with four times more ventilators than other hospitals in the state, ensuring improved readiness for critical cases. The addition of MRI facilities and other advanced equipment has further strengthened diagnostic services.

Cancer Care and Trauma Services in Focus

Cancer treatment is a key priority. The hospital is actively participating in ICMR-supported research projects on breast and cervical cancer, and its radiation oncology department treats 83 patients regularly, with a daily footfall of 20–30. So far, the department has managed nearly 900 cancer cases.

The institute is constructing a dedicated Trauma Centre and has proposed a Phase 2 expansion plan worth Rs 178.05 crore. Additionally, it has completed a feasibility study for a Rs 332 crore development project to further improve cancer care infrastructure.

Academic Excellence and Growing Talent Pool

Academically, AIIMS Bilaspur has scaled up to 620 students, including 100 MBBS seats, and currently offers 17 broad specialities. While faculty recruitment is ongoing, positions in medical gastroenterology remain vacant.

Future-Ready Diagnostics

Looking ahead, the institute is preparing to introduce PET scan and titration control facilities, aiming to boost diagnostic accuracy and improve patient outcomes.

Addressing Emerging Health Challenges

Prof. DN Sharma, Director of AIIMS Bilaspur, highlighted the alarming rise in lifestyle-related cancers, especially lung cancer, and cited Delhi’s leading numbers in prostate cancer as a growing concern.
