All India Institute of Medical Sciences Patna inaugurated a state-of-the-art SPECT-CT (Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography–Computed Tomography) Gamma Camera at its Department of Nuclear Medicine on Friday. The installation marks a significant step in expanding advanced diagnostic services for patients in Bihar and the broader eastern India region.
Enhancing Access to Advanced Diagnostics
The inauguration ceremony was attended by several senior faculty members and administrators. Speaking at the event, chief guest Raju Agarwal described the installation as a forward-looking initiative that integrates cutting-edge medical technology with public healthcare services.
He emphasised that the availability of hybrid imaging at a government institution will ensure more equitable access to high-end diagnostic services. Furthermore, it will reduce the need for patients to travel outside the state for specialised investigations.
How the SPECT-CT System Improves Diagnosis
As reported by TOI, the newly installed SPECT-CT system combines functional imaging through SPECT with detailed anatomical imaging through CT. By integrating these two imaging modalities, doctors can precisely locate and characterise disease within the body.
Consequently, the technology is expected to significantly improve diagnostic accuracy and clinical decision-making across several medical specialities, including oncology, cardiology, neurology, orthopaedics, and endocrinology. In particular, the system will support the diagnosis and management of conditions such as thyroid and parathyroid disorders.
Officials added that the advanced imaging system will enable faster diagnosis, accurate disease staging, and personalised treatment planning, thereby improving patient outcomes.
Building a Comprehensive Nuclear Medicine Hub
Pankaj Kumar, Associate Professor and Head of the Department of Nuclear Medicine, stated that the department aims to develop a comprehensive nuclear medicine hub at AIIMS Patna.
He explained that the facility was established after complying with the radiation safety standards and guidelines of the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board. In addition to enhancing clinical services, the new system will also support postgraduate training, academic programmes, and research activities within the institution.
Strengthening AIIMS Patna’s Role in Super-Specialty Care
Anup Kumar, Medical Superintendent of AIIMS Patna, noted that the commissioning of the SPECT-CT system reflects the institute’s continued progress as a centre of excellence in super-specialty diagnostics. He also reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to patient-centred healthcare services.
Participation of Faculty and Staff
The inauguration ceremony witnessed the presence of several faculty members and administrative officials, including Ruchi Sinha, Tribhuwan Kumar, Kranti Bhavana, and Amit Raj.
Additionally, Nilotpal Bal, Deputy Director (Administration), attended the event along with residents, nursing officers, and other staff members, highlighting the institute’s collective effort to strengthen advanced diagnostic services.
