In a significant boost to healthcare, education, and research in North India, Kanpur is set to gain national prominence in speech and hearing sciences. Authorities are establishing a satellite centre of the All India Institute of Speech and Hearing (AIISH), marking a major expansion beyond its Mysuru base.

Project Scope and Timeline

As reported by TOI, the institute, currently under construction in the Surar area, spans approximately 81,000 square metres. Officials have allocated a budget of ₹180 crore for the project and aim to complete it by October 31, 2026. Once operational, it will become the second AIISH institute in the country and the first in North India, thereby reducing dependence on the Mysuru facility.

Advanced Infrastructure and Facilities

The upcoming centre will feature state-of-the-art infrastructure comparable to the Mysuru institute. It will house advanced audiology laboratories, speech therapy units, hearing assessment facilities, and dedicated spaces for specialised training and research. Consequently, the institute will strengthen both clinical services and academic capabilities in the region.

Administrative Oversight and Progress Review

Recently, District Magistrate Jitendra Pratap Singh inspected the construction site and reviewed the project’s progress. He directed officials to maintain quality standards while ensuring timely completion. Moreover, he stressed the importance of regular monitoring to keep the project on track.

Boost to Education and Early Intervention

The campus will also include separate hostel facilities for 102 male and 102 female students, enabling access for learners from across the country. In addition, construction of the medical block and pre-primary unit is progressing steadily. Notably, the pre-primary unit will focus on early identification and intervention for speech and hearing disorders among young children.

Implementation and Technical Supervision

NPCC Limited is executing the project under the aegis of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. Meanwhile, IIT (BHU) Varanasi is providing technical quality supervision. Together, these efforts aim to deliver a world-class institution that advances healthcare delivery, education, and research in speech and hearing sciences.
