Renowned cardiologist and Padma Shri awardee Dr G Vijayaraghavan died in Thiruvananthapuram at the age of 84. He had been undergoing treatment for age-related health conditions.
Dr Vijayaraghavan served as the vice-chairman of KIMS Hospital, Thiruvananthapuram, and made significant contributions to cardiology through his clinical, academic and research work.
Pioneer in Cardiac Imaging
Dr Vijayaraghavan played a key role in introducing two-dimensional (2D) echocardiography in India. In the late 1970s, he and his team established the country’s first 2D echocardiography laboratory at Government Medical College, Thiruvananthapuram.
As per ThePrint, he also conducted important research on endomyocardial fibrosis and contributed extensively to cardiac care and medical education.
Honoured with Padma Shri
The government honoured Dr Vijayaraghavan with the Padma Shri in 2009 for his contributions to medicine. He also authored several books on cardiology and received fellowships from various medical institutions.
His death marks the loss of a pioneering cardiologist whose work helped advance cardiac diagnosis, research and medical education in India.
