The Alkem Foundation, the CSR arm of Alkem Laboratories, has partnered with the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay to set up an advanced research centre dedicated to immunotherapeutics and regenerative medicine. This initiative aims to drive India’s leadership in applied biotechnology and strengthen the nation’s translational healthcare ecosystem.
A National Model for Industry–Academia Collaboration
Under this collaboration, the Alkem Foundation will fund the establishment of the Alkem Centre for Advanced Research and Development of Applied Immunotherapeutics and Regenerative Medicines within the IIT Bombay campus. The foundation will contribute 20–25% of its cumulative CSR obligations over the next seven years to develop this centre.
Together, IIT Bombay and the Alkem Foundation seek to create a national model for industry–academia partnerships that fosters affordable, high-impact healthcare innovations, positioning India as a global hub for advanced medical research.
Building a Comprehensive Ecosystem for Innovation
As reported by Business Standard, the upcoming centre will serve as a comprehensive ecosystem for innovation, research, and skill development in complex and underserved therapeutic areas. It will bridge critical gaps in infrastructure, talent, and translational capability, particularly in high-precision and regenerative medicine.
Additionally, the centre will act as a training and incubation hub for clinician-scientists and biotech entrepreneurs, empowering them to translate cutting-edge discoveries into practical healthcare solutions.
Promoting Research-Driven CSR Investments
Highlighting the significance of this initiative, Madhurima Singh, Executive Director and Chairperson of the CSR and Sustainability Committee at Alkem, emphasized that despite government efforts, only a small portion of India’s corporate CSR spending goes toward R&D. “This partnership reflects our shared commitment to developing healthcare solutions by India, for India and the world,” she said.
Advancing Self-Reliance in Healthcare Innovation
Echoing this vision, Prof. Shireesh B. Kedare, Director of IIT Bombay, stated that the collaboration will enable clinical breakthroughs, reduce dependence on imports, and advance India’s journey toward self-reliance in healthcare innovation.
Through this strategic partnership, Alkem Foundation and IIT Bombay aim to catalyse transformative research that delivers affordable, accessible, and globally competitive healthcare solutions for the future.
