Apollo Hospitals has launched a new initiative to strengthen patient transfer services through coordinated air ambulance transportation across India and international locations. The programme involves partnerships with several domestic and global air ambulance service providers to improve patient access to advanced critical care facilities.
Through this initiative, Apollo aims to create a more efficient and coordinated medical transport system, particularly for critically ill patients who require rapid transfer to specialised hospitals.
Integration with Apollo’s 1066 Emergency Response Network
As reported by vohnetwork, the initiative operates through Apollo’s 1066 Emergency Response Network, which will serve as the central coordination hub for managing patient transfers.
Once integrated, the system will streamline communication between emergency teams, hospitals, and air ambulance providers. As a result, the approach is expected to improve response times, enhance coordination, and ensure greater cost transparency in emergency medical transport.
Moreover, the initiative will particularly benefit patients located in remote or underserved regions, where immediate access to tertiary and quaternary care centres may be limited.
Partnerships with Multiple Air Ambulance Providers
To expand its air medical transport capabilities, Apollo Hospitals has partnered with several air ambulance operators in India and internationally.
These include Bluedot Charters and Air Ambulance Services (UAE), AeroMed International Rescue Services Pvt Ltd, Jhankar Aviation Pvt. Ltd, iCATT Health Solutions Pvt. Ltd, Air Rescuers World Wide Pvt. Ltd, Vedant Air Rescue Pvt. Ltd., AeroCare Air Ambulance Service, Ayusewa Air & Train Ambulance, Air Medical 24X7 Pvt. Ltd., and Flaps Aviation Private Ltd.
Through these collaborations, Apollo aims to facilitate time-sensitive patient transfers requiring specialised treatment at advanced care centres.
Enhancing Access to Advanced Critical Care
Commenting on the initiative, Dr. Preetha Reddy, Executive Vice Chairperson, Apollo Hospitals, highlighted the importance of timely access to appropriate medical facilities.
She stated that in critical situations, the ability to reach the right hospital quickly can make a life-saving difference. According to her, partnerships with specialised air ambulance providers will make it easier for patients and families to access advanced medical care across cities and international borders in a coordinated and transparent manner.
Furthermore, by integrating the 1066 response network, Apollo ensures that patient transfers include clinical coordination and hospital preparedness, creating a connected pathway that enables patients to receive the care they need at the right time.
Advanced Medical Care During Air Transport
Air ambulances involved in the programme are equipped with advanced life-support systems, including ventilators, defibrillators, and other specialised medical equipment.
According to Dr. Dhavapalani Alagappan, Clinical Director, Emergency Departments, Apollo Hospitals, these aircraft function as mobile intensive care units, enabling critically ill patients to receive continuous medical care while in transit.
During the journey, a trained medical team and certified doctors monitor patients continuously. They can administer medications and perform necessary medical interventions to maintain patient stability and comfort. This approach ensures that the level of care provided in intensive care units continues seamlessly during patient transfers.
Coordinated Emergency Response and Logistics
The patient transfer process begins when a request is received through Apollo’s emergency helpline 1066. The emergency response team first assesses the patient’s medical condition and determines the most suitable mode of transport.
Subsequently, the team coordinates the transfer in collaboration with the selected air ambulance partner, while the operator manages aviation logistics.
Dr. Ramakrishna Vijay Varma, Chief Operating Officer, Healthcare Logistics, Apollo Hospitals, noted that patients using the service have recently benefited from significant cost savings. Since rates are pre-negotiated with partner operators, the system also eliminates the possibility of middlemen involvement.
Enabling Seamless Bed-to-Bed Patient Transfers
The initiative combines Apollo’s emergency coordination system, ground ambulance services, airport connectivity, and partner-operated air ambulance transport to enable seamless bed-to-bed patient transfers.
As a result, critically ill patients can be transported efficiently from their current location to specialised hospitals with minimal delay.
Expanding Access to Advanced Healthcare
Overall, the programme is expected to significantly improve access to advanced medical care, especially for patients in Tier II and Tier III cities as well as international regions.
By strengthening air medical transport infrastructure and integrating it with its emergency response network, Apollo Hospitals aims to ensure faster, coordinated, and reliable patient transfers to specialised healthcare facilities.
