Taking forward its vision of promoting evidence-based traditional medicine, the Ministry of Ayush, through the Central Council for Research in Ayurvedic Sciences (CCRAS) and its Central Ayurveda Research Institute (CARI), Bhubaneswar, in collaboration with the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and its Regional Medical Research Centre (RMRC), Bhubaneswar, is organizing a two-day National Seminar on “Hepatobiliary Wellness through Ayurveda: Bridging Traditional Wisdom with Contemporary Science” on October 25–26, 2025, in Bhubaneswar.
Theme: ‘Yakrut Suraksha, Jiveeta Raksha’
The seminar, themed “Yakrut Suraksha, Jiveeta Raksha” (Protect the Liver, Preserve Life), aims to promote integrative, research-backed approaches for liver and biliary health. The event highlights the growing need for collaboration between Ayurveda and modern biomedical sciences to address the increasing burden of hepatobiliary disorders.
Strengthening Integrative and Evidence-Based Research
Highlighting the initiative, Prof. Rabinarayan Acharya, Director General, CCRAS, emphasized Ayurveda’s holistic framework for hepatobiliary wellness. “Ayurvedic sciences focus on prevention, balance, and sustainable healthcare. Through collaborative research, we are scientifically validating Ayurvedic formulations and principles to understand their mechanisms and clinical relevance. These efforts strengthen Ayurveda’s global credibility and pave the way for innovative, evidence-based healthcare solutions,” he said.
Echoing similar views, Dr. Sanghamitra Pati, Additional Director General, ICMR, and Director, RMRC Bhubaneswar, noted, “Hepatobiliary disorders pose complex challenges that require cross-disciplinary research. Integrating Ayurveda with modern biomedical science opens new avenues for safer therapies and improved patient care. Together, we can develop healthcare models that are preventive, personalized, and globally applicable.”
Key Focus Areas and Themes
The seminar will include deliberations across five major themes focusing on preventive and therapeutic strategies. Day One will explore Ayurvedic dietetics, Dinacharya, Rutucharya, Panchakarma, and detoxification therapies, along with sessions on disease-specific management of NAFLD, Hepatitis, and Liver Cirrhosis. Day Two will emphasize experimental and clinical research on the safety and efficacy of Ayurvedic formulations and discuss integration models with hospital-based practices, including insights into the Gut-Liver Axis.
As reported by pib.gov.in , the event will also feature 58 scientific presentations—22 oral and 36 poster sessions—showcasing clinical findings, experimental data, and translational research outcomes.
Spotlight on Tribal and Indigenous Knowledge
An exclusive session on “Ethnomedicine in Hepatobiliary Disorders” will feature 20 tribal healers from across Odisha. This segment reflects the Ministry’s inclusive approach to preserving and promoting indigenous medical wisdom within a structured scientific framework.
Showcasing India’s Ongoing Research Efforts
The Ministry of Ayush has been conducting extensive research through CCRAS and allied institutions to validate Ayurvedic interventions for liver health. Notably, pre-clinical studies on Picrorhiza kurroa (Kutaki) and Ayush-PTK formulations have shown strong hepatoprotective potential. Collaborative projects with CSIR-CDRI, Lucknow are evaluating Ayurvedic drugs against anti-tubercular therapy (ATT)-induced liver toxicity. Additionally, a multicentric clinical trial on Arogyavardhini Vati and Pippalyasava has demonstrated encouraging outcomes in managing metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD). A double-blind randomized controlled trial is also underway to assess the hepatoprotective efficacy of Ayush-PTK in tuberculosis patients undergoing ATT therapy.
Bringing Together Experts and Innovators
The seminar will bring together leading experts from both modern and traditional medical disciplines. Eminent speakers include Prof. (Dr.) Ashutosh Biswas, Executive Director & CEO, AIIMS Bhubaneswar; Prof. Subrat Kumar Acharya, Pro-Chancellor, KIIMS Bhubaneswar & Executive Director, Fortis Escorts, New Delhi; and Dr. Sarada Ota, Assistant Director In-Charge, CARI Bhubaneswar. The event will also feature Prof. Manas Ranjan Sahoo, Dr. N. Srikanth, Dr. Ashok B. K., and Dr. Rajesh Kumavat, among others.
Towards a New Era of Integrative Liver Care
This collaborative seminar underscores the Ministry of Ayush’s commitment to scientific rigor, interdisciplinary cooperation, and translational research. By blending Ayurveda’s timeless wisdom with modern scientific inquiry, the event seeks to shape innovative, integrative strategies for hepatobiliary wellness and reinforce India’s global leadership in traditional medicine research.
