In a major step towards improving global access to malaria prevention, Bharat Biotech International Ltd and British pharmaceutical giant GSK plc have announced plans to cut the price of the world’s first malaria vaccine, RTS,S (also known as Mosquirix), by more than half — to below $5 per dose by 2028. The decision is part of their pledges for Gavi’s 2026–2030 replenishment cycle.

Driving Factors Behind the Price Cut

The companies attribute the planned price reduction to improved production processes, expanded manufacturing capacity, cost-effective methods, and a commitment to minimal profit margins. In a joint statement released Wednesday, they emphasised that the price drop will begin immediately. It will be fully realised by 2028, when Bharat Biotech assumes full manufacturing responsibilities.

Milestone Vaccine and Manufacturing Transfer

GSK, in collaboration with global non-profit PATH and other partners, developed RTS,S, which the World Health Organization (WHO) recommended in 2021 as the first malaria vaccine. In the same year, Bharat Biotech signed a product transfer agreement with GSK to produce the vaccine in India.

Under this agreement, GSK will transfer the antigen technology to Bharat Biotech and grant full licensing rights. Bharat Biotech will take over the complete production process by 2028, enabling the vaccine’s global supply at a reduced cost.

Investments to Support Capacity and Efficiency

To facilitate the transition, GSK has made substantial investments to scale up production and enhance manufacturing efficiencies. Meanwhile, Bharat Biotech has invested over $200 million to boost its capabilities. The funds support new high-output manufacturing units, product development, and smooth technology transfers.

TOI reports that Bharat Biotech will manufacture the vaccine at its facility in Ankleshwar, Gujarat.

Commitment to Global Health Equity

Bharat Biotech’s executive chairman, Dr Krishna Ella, described the pledge as a commitment to global equity and collaboration. “By joining forces with GSK and working closely with Gavi and the WHO, we are taking a real step toward closing the gap between vaccine supply and the urgent needs of children at risk of malaria,” he said.

Echoing this sentiment, GSK’s Chief Global Health Officer, Dr Thomas Breuer, added, “Our partnership with Bharat Biotech is aimed at finding a sustainable, long-term solution to malaria. Together, we have streamlined manufacturing and transferred technology to ensure long-term affordability and accessibility.”

This development marks a crucial advancement in the fight against malaria. It is especially significant in regions where the disease still poses a deadly threat to young children.
