BITS Hyderabad Develops Smart Device for Instant Kidney Tests

Researchers at BITS Pilani, Hyderabad, have developed a portable electrochemical diagnostic device that can detect kidney function abnormalities within minutes. The compact system measures three key kidney biomarkers—creatinine, urea, and uric acid—allowing healthcare providers to perform rapid tests without relying on conventional laboratory equipment.

Smartphone-Linked Technology

The device combines laser-induced graphene technology with advanced electrochemical sensors to deliver quick and accurate results. It connects directly to a smartphone, enabling users to view test readings through a web browser in real time. As per The Economic Times, this innovation could simplify kidney disease screening by reducing the need for lengthy lab procedures and making diagnostics more accessible.

Improving Access to Early Diagnosis

Unlike traditional kidney function tests that often require visits to diagnostic laboratories and hours of waiting, the portable device offers near-instant results at the point of care. Consequently, it has the potential to improve early detection, particularly in rural and remote areas where access to healthcare facilities remains limited.
