First Human Receives Experimental Vaccine Against Rare Ebola Strain

Oxford Launches First Human Trial

Researchers at the University of Oxford have administered the first dose of an experimental vaccine designed to protect against the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola, marking the world’s first human trial for a vaccine targeting this rare but deadly virus. The Phase I clinical trial, named BD-Ebov, will enroll 50 healthy adults aged 18 to 55 to evaluate the vaccine’s safety and its ability to trigger an immune response.

Filling a Critical Gap

The Bundibugyo strain has caused multiple Ebola outbreaks in Africa, including the ongoing outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda. However, unlike the Zaire strain—which already has approved vaccines—there is currently no licensed vaccine or specific treatment for Bundibugyo Ebola. As per BBC News, scientists accelerated the vaccine’s development to address this critical gap and improve preparedness for future outbreaks.

Why the Trial Matters

The vaccine uses Oxford’s ChAdOx1 viral vector platform, which has previously been used in vaccines against other infectious diseases. If the trial demonstrates that the vaccine is safe and produces a strong immune response, researchers will move to larger studies to confirm its effectiveness. Although the process will take time, the trial represents an important step toward expanding protection against multiple Ebola strains.

Growing Need for Better Protection

Meanwhile, health officials continue to battle one of the largest Bundibugyo Ebola outbreaks on record. The outbreak has claimed more than 1,000 lives and infected thousands of people, while conflict, misinformation, and limited healthcare resources have complicated response efforts. Therefore, experts believe a successful vaccine could significantly strengthen global efforts to contain future outbreaks and protect vulnerable communities.
