Celebrating Doctors Day

The Indian Practitioner salutes doctors for their tireless service, the knowledge and skills they bring to their work with compassion and empathy.

So to all doctors who serve with dedication, courage, caring and kindness, our deepest gratitude.

Here are the quotes:

Dr. Nikhil Sarangdhar, Joint Secretary, National College of Chest Physicians India

Doctors’ Day is celebrated in India on the first of July, as the birthday of Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy, an eminent physician who played a leading role as one of the pioneers of our freedom struggle and national movement, as well as an able administrator as the very first Chief Minister of Bengal. Medical care is at a crossroads today as societal expectations from the medical professions run high but one must never forget that medicine as an art as well as a science is firstly a profession and not primarily a social service. Therefore, instead of a ‘service’ model which has been followed traditionally or the ‘business’ model in the west, the practise of medicine in our country should follow a ‘professional service’ model, in order to bridge the gap between both worlds and provide a good standard of healthcare to all, in addition to uphold the dignity and respect accorded to the medical profession.

Wishing all my friends in the doctor community a Happy Doctors’ Day 2025! Your care, courage, and commitment make a world of difference every single day. Thank you for being the strength behind so many lives saved. Your healing hands inspire hope among millions. Continue your great work.

Dr. Manish Maladkar, M.B.B.S., M.D., M.C.C.P. (USA), a postgraduate from Grant Medical College and J. J. Hospital, Mumbai, heads the medical department of a leading pharmaceutical company.

In this era, the Indian healthcare system faces immense challenges: poor infrastructure, high patient load, public–private healthcare imbalances, and the ever-increasing cost of medical care.

As doctors, we often rely heavily on diagnostic and laboratory tests. While these are sometimes essential, they can also be overused—leading to unnecessary costs for patients. Many tests could be avoided if we placed greater emphasis on thorough clinical evaluation at the bedside.

Today, the age-old science of bedside diagnosis, based on careful history-taking and examination, has taken a backseat. It is often overshadowed by the allure of advanced diagnostics and laboratory investigations. However, reviving and prioritising clinical acumen can help us save both time and money for our patients—while maintaining high-quality care.

There is a saying in medicine: “If you hear hoofbeats, think horses, not zebras.” The “zebras” represent rare conditions. Common things are common. This principle is highly relevant here.

By focusing on strong clinical diagnosis before turning to costly investigations, we can make our healthcare system more accessible, affordable, and effective for all.

Dr. Jayesh Sheth, Sr Geneticist, Biochemist and Laboratory Endocrinologist, Institute of Human Genetics, Ahmedabad

Thank you doctors, for your tireless, compassionate, and kind efforts to save the lives of millions, which inspire millions of people across the globe.

Continue your selfless societal services in the global unrest, crave for money and muscle power.
