Cipla Limited (BSE: 500087; NSE: CIPLA) has announced the launch of Afrezza® (insulin human) Inhalation Powder in India, marking a significant advancement in diabetes care. Cipla received regulatory approval from the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO) late last year for the exclusive distribution and marketing of Afrezza®, a rapid-acting, needle-free inhaled insulin. With this launch, Cipla aims to benefit the nearly 10 crore adults currently living with diabetes mellitus in India.
A Needle-Free Alternative to Injectable Insulin
As per Cipla Press release, Afrezza® delivers insulin in the form of a single-use inhalation powder cartridge, administered through a specially designed inhaler device. The process is simple and patient-friendly: users select the appropriate dose cartridge, load it into the inhaler, inhale the insulin, and then remove the cartridge. Typically initiated with the largest meal of the day, the therapy can be intensified based on individual needs.
Rapid Action That Mimics Natural Insulin Response
Developed and manufactured by MannKind Corporation, USA, Afrezza® dissolves rapidly upon oral inhalation and begins lowering blood glucose levels within approximately 12 minutes. As a result, it closely mimics the body’s natural insulin response. By offering a rapid-acting, needle-free alternative to daily prandial injections, Afrezza® supports improved treatment adherence and enables faster glycaemic control in adults with both type 1 and type 2 diabetes.
Addressing Barriers to Insulin Adherence
Importantly, the differentiated delivery system helps overcome emotional and practical barriers associated with injectable insulin, such as fear of needles, treatment fatigue, and social discomfort. These challenges often lead patients to delay or discontinue insulin therapy—an issue that healthcare experts continue to highlight as a major gap in effective diabetes management.
Cipla Reaffirms Its Commitment to Accessible Care
Commenting on the launch, Achin Gupta, Global Chief Operating Officer, Cipla Limited, stated that Cipla’s purpose has always been to make quality healthcare more accessible. He noted that the introduction of Afrezza® in India reflects this commitment by simplifying insulin delivery and reducing the emotional burden of daily injections. Through its extensive reach and patient-centric approach, Cipla aims to help millions of Indians manage diabetes with greater confidence and comfort.
Nationwide Awareness Initiative to Support Patients
In addition to the product launch, Cipla will roll out a nationwide awareness initiative to address the emotional and behavioural barriers that hinder insulin adherence. The campaign will focus on overcoming fears related to injections, complex treatment routines, and social stigma. Through empathetic storytelling, digital outreach, and on-ground engagement, the initiative will promote education, empowerment, and destigmatisation in diabetes care.
