Bengaluru Startup Develops Technology That Destroys Airborne Microbes

Air inside hospitals is meant to save lives. However, it often becomes a hidden carrier of infections. Addressing this critical challenge, a Bengaluru-based deep-tech startup has developed a research-driven air decontamination technology that actively destroys airborne microbes instead of merely trapping them.

Founded in 2014 by scientists Dr Janani Venkatraman, Dr Arindam Ghatak, and Dr Santanu Datta, Biomoneta Research Private Limited aims to make clinically proven, science-backed air safety a standard of care in environments that protect vulnerable lives.

From Research to Real-World Deployment

Biomoneta commercialises its innovation through products such as Avata Rx, which embed the company’s proprietary ZeB-box platform into devices designed for specific, high-need environments. Rather than offering a generic air purifier, the startup develops purpose-built solutions tailored to real-world clinical and high-risk settings.

What Makes the ZeB-box Platform Different

According to Dr Janani Venkatraman, the novelty of the ZeB-box platform lies in the seamless integration of three critical elements into a single intelligent system. First, proprietary microbicidal surfaces inactivate microorganisms on contact. Second, a precisely engineered airflow architecture guides airborne microbes toward these active surfaces, preventing them from bypassing the system—a common limitation of conventional air purifiers. Third, advanced power electronics generate a finely tuned electric field aligned with the natural behaviour of microbes.

Since all pathogens—including bacteria, viruses, fungi, and spores—carry surface charges, ZeB-box exploits this universal property. The electric field pulls microbes out of the air and directs them to the microbicidal surface, where they are destroyed in real time.

Moving Beyond Conventional Air Purification

As a result, ZeB-box clearly differentiates itself from existing technologies. Unlike HEPA filters that merely trap particles, UV systems that struggle under real-world airflow conditions, or plasma- and ozone-based solutions that risk generating harmful by-products, ZeB-box actively attracts and kills pathogens without compromising safety.

Designed for Clinical-Grade Safety and Performance

Unlike consumer-grade air purifiers, Biomoneta’s products meet stringent safety and performance standards aligned with their intended applications. Devices designed for healthcare settings comply with IEC 60601 medical device standards, while solutions for consumer environments adhere to IEC 60335 electrical safety requirements.

Consequently, Biomoneta’s systems are deployed across ICUs, NICUs, oncology wards, operation theatres, OPDs, dialysis centres, IVF laboratories, and dental clinics—spaces where controlling airborne infection is critical.

Expanding Beyond Healthcare Settings

Beyond hospitals, Biomoneta also serves pharmaceutical and biotechnology cleanrooms that require strict microbial control to meet regulatory norms. In addition, the company supports high-risk home-care environments for immunocompromised patients. The ZeB-box platform further enables specialised integrations for ambulances, HVAC and AHU systems, office cubicles, and even high-end automobiles, highlighting its scalability across both compact and large-scale applications.

In-House Manufacturing with Growing Local Sourcing

As reported by Electronicsforu, Biomoneta manufactures its products in-house at an ISO 13485-certified facility in Sahakar Nagar, Bengaluru. A compact team of around ten engineers and technicians supports production using basic tooling, 3D printing, and automated assembly equipment.

Dr Arindam Ghatak noted that while the company initially sourced certain electronic components internationally, it has since transitioned to reliable Indian suppliers for most parts. Early challenges related to custom components and low-volume manufacturing have eased as India’s supplier ecosystems in technology hubs continue to mature.

A Philosophy Rooted in Life and Value

The name Biomoneta reflects the company’s core philosophy—bio symbolising life and health, and moneta, the Latin word for money, representing value creation. Through this balance, Biomoneta continues to align scientific rigour with real-world impact in the fight against airborne infections.
