The Department of Engineering Design at IIT Madras has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with BMEC Imaging Pvt. Ltd. to establish the Medical Design and Imaging Laboratory. Through this partnership, the two institutions aim to strengthen industry–academia collaboration in the rapidly evolving field of medical technology.
Focus on Research, Product Development, and Skills
Under the MoU, IIT Madras and BMEC Imaging will collaborate on joint research, product development, and skill-building initiatives in medical imaging, oncology, and allied healthcare technologies. In doing so, the partnership seeks to address critical gaps in India’s MedTech ecosystem while accelerating innovation and translation into clinical practice.
Enhancing Academic and Research Programmes
As per the BMEC Imaging/ LinkedIn, In addition, the collaboration will significantly strengthen the Department of Engineering Design’s academic offerings, including the B.Tech + M.Tech Dual Degree in Biomedical Design, as well as the MS (by Research) and doctoral programmes. By enabling students and researchers to work on real-world healthcare challenges, the initiative will enhance experiential learning and research relevance.
Driving Affordable and Accessible Healthcare Innovation
By combining BMEC Imaging’s expertise in advanced imaging systems with IIT Madras’ design-led, interdisciplinary approach, the partnership aims to develop affordable and accessible healthcare solutions with global impact. Ultimately, the Medical Design and Imaging Laboratory will serve as a platform for innovation that bridges engineering design and clinical needs.
