Dr. Beena Pillai has taken charge as the new Director of Rajiv Gandhi Centre for Biotechnology (BRIC-RGCB), Thiruvananthapuram. The Appointments Committee of the Union Cabinet approved her appointment for a five-year term. She succeeds Prof. Chandrabhas Narayana, who completed his tenure in September last year.
Distinguished Career in RNA Biology
As per the press release, Dr. Pillai is an accomplished scientist with deep expertise in RNA biology and neuronal development. At CSIR-Institute of Genomics and Integrative Biology (CSIR-IGIB), New Delhi, she led pioneering research on the role of RNAs in early development, neurogenesis, adult behaviour, and disease susceptibility. Furthermore, her lab has contributed significantly to identifying miRNA markers for human diseases, strengthening the understanding of molecular mechanisms in health and disease.
Strong Academic and Research Foundation
Originally from Kalady, Dr. Pillai built a strong academic foundation early in her career. She completed her B.Sc from Ramnarain Ruia College and went on to pursue an integrated MS-PhD at Indian Institute of Science. Subsequently, she joined CSIR-IGIB as a young scientist and steadily rose through the ranks.
Awards and Recognitions
Over the years, Dr. Pillai has received several prestigious honours. These include the National Bioscience Award, the INSA Young Scientist Award, and the CSIR Young Scientist Award in Biological Sciences. Collectively, these accolades highlight her significant contributions to biological sciences and genomics research.
Driving Innovation at BRIC-RGCB
Biotechnology Research and Innovation Council (BRIC-RGCB), under the Department of Biotechnology, Ministry of Science and Technology, plays a key role in advancing discovery research, translational science, and technology development. In addition, the institute focuses on training the next generation of scientists.
With her extensive experience at CSIR-IGIB—a premier centre for genomics, molecular medicine, and bioinformatics—Dr. Pillai is expected to lead several new initiatives. These include establishing a cGMP facility, developing a bio-manufacturing hub, and advancing plans for an oncology referral hospital.
Warm Welcome from the Scientific Community
Meanwhile, the scientific community at RGCB has extended a warm welcome to Dr. Pillai. As she steps into this leadership role, expectations remain high that her vision and expertise will further strengthen the institute’s research and innovation landscape.
