Discovery of a Hidden Health Threat
As per the press release, the patient had been living with a distended abdomen, assuming it was due to weight gain. However, a casual remark from a stranger prompted her to seek medical evaluation. An ultrasound scan revealed a large fluid-filled cyst occupying almost the entire abdominal cavity.
Further assessments showed that the left ovarian cyst, measuring approximately 20×20 cm, was compressing major abdominal vessels and organs, causing breathing difficulties, low blood pressure, and restricted mobility.
Complex Surgery Performed with Precision
Given the critical nature of her condition, the Surgical and Gynae Oncology team—comprising Dr. Mythili Kundur, Associate Consultant, Surgical Oncology (Gynecology), and Dr. Elvis P. Joseph, Associate Consultant, Surgical Oncology—undertook a staging laparotomy to remove the cyst intact.
During surgery, the team identified a 9 kg ovarian mass extending from the upper to the lower abdomen. Importantly, they preserved the patient’s other ovary to maintain hormonal balance and fertility potential. A frozen section test conducted during surgery indicated a borderline malignancy, while the final biopsy results are awaited.
The patient has since recovered well and is expected to be discharged soon.
