In a remarkable blend of medical excellence and human compassion, Wockhardt Hospitals, Mira Road successfully performed a rare and complex ABO incompatible kidney transplant, saving the life of a 39-year-old patient.

As per the press release, the patient, who was diabetic and physically fragile, had no suitable donor within his immediate family. However, in an extraordinary act of selflessness, his 55-year-old father-in-law stepped forward to donate his kidney despite having a different blood group—AB positive donor to B positive recipient. Notably, such transplants are highly challenging due to the heightened risk of infections, especially in patients with very high antibody titres.

Advanced Planning and Precision-Driven Care
To overcome these challenges, the medical team implemented an advanced desensitisation protocol to lower the patient’s antibody levels before proceeding with the transplant. Consequently, the team ensured optimal conditions for a successful surgery.

The transplant was carried out with meticulous planning, strict infection control measures, and comprehensive post-operative care. As a result, the procedure was completed successfully, demonstrating both technical expertise and coordinated teamwork.

Strong Recovery and Improved Quality of Life
Today, just one month after the transplant, both the donor and recipient are in good health. Importantly, the patient has been taken off dialysis and has begun gaining weight, indicating a significant improvement in overall health and quality of life.

Expert Surgical Team Ensures Success
A highly experienced surgical team led the procedure with precision. The team included Dr. Jayesh Dabalia, Dr. Pradeep Vyavahare, Dr. Prakash Tejwani, and Dr. Ashutosh Baghel—Consultant Urologists and Renal Transplant Surgeons. Together, they ensured seamless intraoperative management and comprehensive postoperative care.

Expert Insight on a Rare Case
Speaking about the case, Dr. Puneet Bhuwania, Nephrologist and Kidney Transplant Physician at the hospital, said, “This case is both rare and deeply inspiring. Performing an ABO incompatible kidney transplant in the presence of very high antibody titres is extremely challenging. Moreover, the father-in-law’s selfless decision to donate highlights the strength of familial bonds that go beyond biological compatibility. With advanced desensitisation and a multidisciplinary approach, we achieved a successful outcome.”
