Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories has launched its oral semaglutide biosimilar in India for the treatment of Type 2 diabetes mellitus. The company introduced the drug under the brand name “Obeda,” marking a major step toward expanding access to advanced diabetes treatment in the country.
Obeda Available in Multiple Strengths
The newly launched medicine comes in 3 mg, 7 mg, and 14 mg tablet strengths and is designed for once-daily oral use. Dr Reddy’s priced the tablets at ₹99, ₹135, and ₹225 per tablet, respectively. The company stated that the drug will help improve glycaemic control in adults with Type 2 diabetes when combined with diet and exercise.
Company Focuses on Accessibility and Affordability
Dr Reddy’s said the launch reflects its broader strategy to make innovative diabetes care more accessible and affordable for Indian patients. MV Ramana, CEO – Global Generics at Dr Reddy’s Laboratories, stated that treatment choices should address the diverse needs of diabetes patients. He also highlighted the company’s commitment to reliable supply and consistent quality.
As per The Economic Times, Dr Reddy’s became the second Indian pharmaceutical company after Torrent Pharmaceuticals to introduce oral semaglutide in the domestic market. The report also noted that the product was developed and formulated in-house.
CDSCO Approval Backed by Clinical Study
The company received approval from the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO) after completing a Phase III clinical study involving 288 patients in India. According to Dr Reddy’s, the study demonstrated efficacy comparable to the innovator drug along with a similar safety profile.
Growing Competition in the GLP-1 Market
The launch also intensifies competition in India’s rapidly growing GLP-1 drug segment. Earlier this year, Dr Reddy’s introduced generic semaglutide injections in both India and Canada following the expiry of patents held by Novo Nordisk. Analysts expect increased competition to improve affordability and widen patient access to diabetes and obesity treatments.
