Eli Lilly and Company (India), in collaboration with the Association of Physicians of India (API), has launched a nationwide Continuing Medical Education (CME) initiative titled ‘API – Obesity Gurukul’. This programme aims to build clinical expertise among physicians to address obesity—a growing public health challenge in India.
Gurukul-Style Learning for Modern Medicine
Focus on Scientific and Evidence-Based Learning
As reported by Express Healthcare, the curriculum will cover the pathophysiology of obesity. It will also highlight evidence-based clinical approaches for its management. The goal is to deepen understanding and promote a more scientific, sustained strategy for treating obesity as a chronic condition.
Eli Lilly Emphasizes Continuous Learning and Compassionate Care
“Obesity is a complex, chronic condition that needs more than treatment—it requires continuous education, empathy, and coordinated healthcare action,” said Dr. Manish Mistry, Senior Medical Director at Eli Lilly and Company (India). “Our collaboration with API through the Obesity Gurukul programme reaffirms our commitment to advancing clinical knowledge and reshaping the way obesity is perceived and managed. By equipping physicians with up-to-date insights and best practices, we aim to improve care quality and health outcomes for people living with obesity.”
API Stresses the Urgency of Clinical Reframing
Dr. Jyotimoy Pal, President of API, reinforced the programme’s relevance, stating, “Obesity is no longer just a lifestyle concern—it is a disease with serious clinical, psychological, and economic consequences. The Obesity Gurukul initiative represents a significant move toward empowering physicians to address obesity as a long-term health issue.”
Moving Toward Better Outcomes
The Obesity Gurukul programme fosters deeper understanding and clinical capability. It sets the stage for more informed, effective, and empathetic obesity management across the Indian healthcare system.
