The Eye and Brain Centre, supported by D. E. Shaw India, was inaugurated at the L V Prasad Eye Institute (LVPEI), Kallam Anji Reddy Campus in Hyderabad. Leadership teams from both LVPEI and D. E. Shaw India attended the event, marking a significant step toward advancing neuro-ophthalmology in India.
An Integrated Approach to Eye–Brain Health
The Eye and Brain Centre brings together expertise from neuroscience and ophthalmology to deliver comprehensive care. It focuses on training, research, diagnostics, and integrated patient care for complex eye–brain conditions. Notably, the Centre will house a fully equipped neuro-ophthalmology diagnostic and clinical facility, along with a neuroscience laboratory capable of genetic testing. In addition, it will leverage AI-enabled tools to enhance research and diagnostics for intricate eye–brain disorders.
Strengthening Training and National Networks
Furthermore, the Centre aims to strengthen India’s neuro-ophthalmology ecosystem. It will offer structured short- and long-term training programs while building strong referral networks with neurologists, neurosurgeons, and optometrists. Through these efforts, it seeks to bridge existing gaps in expertise and collaboration across specialties.
Building on a Long-Standing Partnership
The initiative builds on the enduring partnership between D. E. Shaw India and LVPEI, which has consistently focused on expanding access to high-quality eye care. Their collaboration continues to drive impactful healthcare initiatives, especially for underserved populations.
Leadership Perspectives
Dr. Ramesh Kekunnaya, Head of the Eye and Brain Centre at LVPEI, emphasized the Centre’s significance, stating that it advances LVPEI’s mission of delivering excellent and equitable eye care by addressing the underserved domain of eye–brain health.
Meanwhile, Mr. Chaitanya Gorrepati, Managing Director at D. E. Shaw India, highlighted healthcare as a key social responsibility priority. He noted that the initiative aims to improve access for patients with complex and underserved conditions while also contributing to the creation of a national resource that integrates patient care, training, and research.
Driving Research, Care, and Capacity Building
As per the press release, the Centre will play a pivotal role in advancing neuro-ophthalmology through integrated patient care, capacity building, and research. It will also foster collaboration across clinical disciplines and support the development of genetic testing and therapy protocols for eye–brain disorders. Importantly, the Centre is expected to deliver over 10,000 patient services annually, including consultations, diagnostics, and follow-up care.
In addition, it will organize symposia and academic engagements to build regional capacity and address the national knowledge gap in neuro-ophthalmology.
