Ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to flood-affected areas, Punjab Health and Family Welfare Minister Balbir Singh revealed the devastating impact of the recent floods on the state’s healthcare infrastructure. Addressing the media at Punjab Bhawan, he said the deluge had delivered a crippling blow to the public health system, with initial damages estimated at ₹780 crores.

Healthcare Infrastructure Severely Hit

Singh detailed that the floods destroyed medicines worth ₹130 crores and inflicted heavy damage on:

  • 1,280 dispensaries and health & wellness centres

  • 101 community health centres

  • 31 of Punjab’s 41 sub-divisional hospitals

He emphasised that these losses represent not just buildings, but also the destruction of life-saving equipment, essential medicines, and facilities on which millions of Punjabis depend.

Health Teams Continue Relief Efforts

Despite the unprecedented destruction, Singh praised the relentless efforts of the Health Department, from the Principal Secretary to ASHA workers. He explained that medical teams have used ambulances, boats, and helicopters. They are delivering aid to people stranded in flood-ravaged areas.

Appeal for Urgent Central Assistance

As reported by Hindustan Times, the minister disclosed that he had already written to Union Health Minister JP Nadda seeking immediate financial support. With Prime Minister Modi scheduled to visit Punjab, Singh made a direct appeal for central aid of at least ₹20,000 crores to rebuild vital health infrastructure and support the state’s recovery.

Demand for Release of Pending Funds

Singh reiterated the Punjab government’s demand for the immediate release of ₹60,000 crores in stalled central funds. He said these funds are crucial for restoring the state’s flood-hit economy. He stressed that a robust healthcare system is essential not only for saving lives but also for enabling economic revival.

Criticism of Union Agriculture Minister

Calling out what he termed the “myopic vision” of Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, Singh urged the Prime Minister to adopt a broader and compassionate approach. He underscored that Punjab requires concrete action and urgent funds, not symbolic gestures.

Punjab Government’s Commitment

Reaffirming the AAP-led state government’s stance, Singh assured that Punjab would continue to advocate strongly at the highest levels. He added that the state aims to secure relief and rebuild a stronger, more resilient healthcare system. He also expressed gratitude to NGOs and volunteers for extending invaluable support during this crisis.
