FMRI Gurugram Study Shows Stem Cell Breakthrough for Children with Sickle Cell Disease

In a landmark achievement for Indian healthcare, doctors at Fortis Memorial Research Institute (FMRI), Gurugram, have reported outstanding success in treating children with Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) through bone marrow (stem cell) transplantation. This breakthrough positions India among the leading nations for advanced pediatric transplant outcomes.

Decade-Long Study Demonstrates Exceptional Results

The decade-long study, published in the international journal Haemoglobin, analyzed 100 pediatric cases treated between 2015 and 2024. The results revealed an overall survival rate of nearly 87%. Matched sibling donor transplants achieved 96% success, while half-matched (haploidentical) family donor transplants achieved 78%. These outcomes rank among the best reported globally, representing a major advancement in SCD management for developing nations.

Importance of Early Diagnosis and Timely Intervention

The study underscored that early diagnosis and timely transplantation are crucial for long-term survival. Performing the procedure before severe complications such as stroke or organ damage significantly improves outcomes. FMRI Gurugram achieved these results using advanced transplant protocols. These protocols minimize side effects and reduce the risk of Graft-versus-Host Disease (GVHD), a common post-transplant complication.

Expert Insights on the Impact

Dr. Vikas Dua, Principal Director, Pediatric Haematology, Oncology, and BMT, said, “Many of these children had been living with pain, repeated hospitalizations, and dependence on transfusions. Today, they are leading healthy, active lives. This milestone proves that India can deliver world-class outcomes at a fraction of the cost, making these life-saving treatments accessible to far more families.”

Dr. Swati Bhayana, Lead Author of the study and Consultant, Pediatric Haematology, Oncology, and BMT, added, “This is a ray of hope for families living with Sickle Cell Disease.” Dr. Rahul Bhargava, Principal Director, Hematology and BMT, emphasized, “Our research shows that children in developing countries like India and across Africa can achieve survival rates comparable to the best centers globally when given timely access to advanced care.”

A Milestone for Indian Healthcare

As reported by gurufocus.com, the achievement marks a significant milestone for India. FMRI Gurugram is now one of the few centers worldwide reporting long-term success in curing children with Sickle Cell Disease. The study highlights the potential of Indian healthcare to deliver world-class, life-saving interventions. It also shows these treatments can be made accessible to families across socio-economic backgrounds.
