In a decisive move to boost organ donation, the government has advised state governments to implement comprehensive measures, including training first responders, establishing specialized hospital teams, upgrading trauma centres, and registering these facilities as organ retrieval units.

Addressing the Organ Shortage Crisis

With India recording fewer than one deceased donor per million people, the Union health ministry has emphasized the urgent need for action. Dr. Anil Kumar, director of the National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (NOTTO), highlighted the country’s severe organ shortage, noting that thousands of patients remain on transplant waiting lists.

Training First Responders

To improve organ and tissue donation from road accident victims, the Centre has urged states to conduct training programs at both state and district levels. These programs will target first responders, including police personnel, ambulance drivers, and paramedical staff, equipping them to identify potential donors and facilitate timely referrals.

Untapped Potential in Road Accident Victims

Road accidents claim the lives of many young and otherwise healthy individuals each year, representing a largely untapped source of organs. According to the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways’ Road Accidents in India 2023 report, nearly 1.7 lakh people died in road accidents last year. “Many of these potential organ donor are lost due to a lack of timely identification and referral,” Dr. Kumar pointed out, underscoring the critical need for rapid intervention and coordinated response.
