After the Supreme Court allowed the sale and use of green crackers in Delhi-NCR for Diwali celebrations, health experts raised serious concerns about the potential surge in pollution levels. They cautioned that even these so-called eco-friendly alternatives could aggravate respiratory issues and deteriorate air quality in the capital.

Supreme Court Allows Conditional Use of Green Crackers

According to the apex court’s October 15 order, the sale of green crackers will be permitted only between October 18 and 21 under strict conditions. Their use, however, will be restricted to specific hours on the day before Diwali and on the festival day. The court also directed that the sale points be designated by district magistrates in consultation with the police, ensuring crackers are sold only from authorized locations.

Experts Highlight Health Risks and Pollution Concerns

Despite the court’s conditional approval, medical experts have urged citizens to exercise restraint. Dr. S. Chatterjee, Senior Consultant at Apollo Hospital, warned that even green crackers pose significant health risks. “It is not that green crackers are free of pollution. The only advantage is that they cause about 30% less pollution compared to conventional crackers,” he told ANI.

Dr. Chatterjee explained that the smaller shell size of green crackers helps reduce particulate matter emissions. However, he emphasized that this does not make them safe. “Given the way pollution is already rising in Delhi, it is highly advisable to avoid using crackers—even green ones,” he added.

Green Crackers Still Add to Delhi’s Air Pollution

While the raw materials used in green crackers are less hazardous, experts assert that they still contribute to overall air pollution. Dr. Chatterjee cautioned that the pollution levels are bound to rise post-Diwali, worsening respiratory conditions for vulnerable individuals. “The general public and patients with respiratory diseases are likely to suffer more after Diwali. It is strongly advisable that the use of green crackers be strictly regulated—or avoided altogether,” he said.

Government Prepares for Enforcement

As reported by The Mint, following the Supreme Court’s order, the Delhi government held meetings with green cracker manufacturers, officials from relevant departments, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), the Delhi Police, and traders to draft an effective enforcement plan. The discussions focused on ensuring compliance with the court’s directives and minimizing the environmental and health impacts during the festive season.

A Call for Responsible Celebration

Even as authorities prepare to enforce regulations, experts are urging citizens to celebrate Diwali responsibly. With pollution levels already on the rise, they stress the importance of adopting eco-friendly practices such as lighting diyas, using decorations, and avoiding firecrackers altogether to ensure a healthier, cleaner festival for all.
