HCG Cancer Hospital Mumbai has treated more than 125 prostate cancer patients with Stereotactic Body Radiotherapy (SBRT) using the Versa HD radiation platform. Selected patients have also received treatment through CyberKnife, a robotic radiation system.
The hospital offers these advanced treatments to appropriately selected patients based on their age, cancer stage, risk category, overall health and individual needs.
Rising Prostate Cancer Cases
As per the press release, the Global Cancer Observatory (GLOBOCAN 2022), IARC–WHO, recorded an estimated 37,948 new prostate cancer cases in India in 2022. This figure is projected to reach around 82,252 cases annually by 2045.
SBRT delivers focused radiation to the tumour while limiting exposure to nearby healthy organs. For suitable patients, treatment can be completed in five sessions, usually without hospitalisation or surgery.
Precision Radiation at HCG Mumbai
HCG Cancer Hospital, Colaba, houses Mumbai’s first and only CyberKnife platform. The technology combines robotic precision and image guidance to deliver targeted radiation while protecting surrounding organs.
Dr Trinanjan Basu, HOD and Senior Consultant, Radiation Oncology, HCG Cancer Hospitals, Mumbai, said, “Many patients believe surgery is the only treatment for prostate cancer. However, for appropriately selected patients, advanced radiation treatments such as SBRT can provide an effective option without surgery or prolonged hospitalisation.”
HCG Mumbai has treated patients across intermediate-risk, high-risk and selected metastatic prostate cancer categories, with most patients aged 60–75.
Focus on Personalised Care
HCG officials said the hospital combines advanced technology with multidisciplinary expertise and precise treatment planning to provide personalised cancer care.
Through this milestone, HCG Mumbai aims to raise awareness that surgery is not the only treatment option for prostate cancer. Depending on the individual case, doctors may recommend radiation, surgery, hormone therapy or a combination of treatments.
