Air Marshal Sandeep Thareja, a physician and gastroenterologist, has assumed charge as the new Director General Armed Forces Medical Services (DGAFMS). He will oversee medical support for India’s armed forces, veterans and their dependants.
His appointment comes as the Armed Forces Medical Services (AFMS) focuses on strengthening operational medical preparedness, modernising healthcare, expanding digital health, advancing medical research and developing its medical workforce.
Nearly Four Decades of Experience
An alumnus of Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC), Pune, Air Marshal Thareja joined the Army Medical Corps in December 1986. He brings nearly four decades of clinical, operational and administrative experience to his new role.
As per The Free Press Journal, his responsibilities will include strengthening healthcare delivery while supporting modernisation, innovation and research across the Armed Forces Medical Services.

As DGAFMS, Air Marshal Thareja will lead efforts to provide comprehensive and high-quality medical care to serving personnel, veterans and their families. His tenure is expected to focus on integrating technology and innovation with military medical services while maintaining operational readiness.
