Extraordinary self-belief, unwavering hope, and world-class medical care came together to save the life of 27-year-old Mumba Margaret, a nurse from Zambia. In September 2023, doctors diagnosed her with Acute Myeloid Leukaemia (AML), one of the most aggressive and life-threatening blood cancers. Recognising the urgent need for advanced treatment and a stem cell (bone marrow) transplant, she made the courageous decision to travel thousands of miles to KIMS Hospital, Secunderabad, in search of hope and survival.

An Unrelenting Treatment Journey

Mumba’s road to recovery was far from straightforward. Even before undergoing the stem cell transplant, doctors diagnosed her with tuberculosis, complicating her treatment plan. Subsequently, her leukaemia relapsed, making another intensive round of chemotherapy unavoidable. Meanwhile, she battled multiple severe infections and remained hospitalised for nearly 40 days. Despite these relentless challenges, Mumba demonstrated remarkable courage and resilience.

Dr. Narendra Kumar Thota, Head of the Hemato-Oncology Department and Stem Cell and Bone Marrow Transplant Specialist at KIMS Hospital, along with his dedicated team, closely monitored her condition and guided every stage of her treatment.

The Stem Cell Transplant and Rare Complications

As per the press release, on June 19, 2025, Mumba underwent her first stem cell transplant at KIMS Hospital. However, the post-transplant phase brought unprecedented challenges. She developed extremely rare and life-threatening complications seen in only a small fraction of patients.

One such complication was dyselectrolytemia, a dangerous imbalance of essential blood electrolytes including sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium, and chloride. This condition can trigger severe weakness, nausea, vomiting, seizures, kidney failure, and other critical risks. In addition, she developed febrile neutropenia, marked by a drastic reduction in infection-fighting white blood cells. At the same time, her heart and lung functions deteriorated significantly.

Neurological Crisis and Cardiac Arrests

As her condition worsened, Mumba also suffered from Posterior Reversible Encephalopathy Syndrome (PRES). This rare neurological disorder caused sudden headaches, seizures, blurred vision, confusion, loss of consciousness, and swelling in the posterior region of the brain.

At her most critical stage, survival seemed almost impossible. Mumba experienced more than seven cardiac arrests, each requiring immediate CPR to revive her. Time and again, the stem cell transplant team, critical care specialists, and cardiology experts worked tirelessly to bring her back. Their relentless efforts, combined with advanced technology and constant vigilance, proved decisive.

Triumph Through Teamwork and Inner Strength

While the medical teams delivered the highest standards of coordinated, multidisciplinary care, Mumba herself played an equally vital role. Her extraordinary mental strength, resilience, and unyielding will to live became a driving force behind her recovery. Together, exceptional clinical expertise and human determination turned the tide in her favour.

A New Beginning Filled with Hope

Today, Mumba Margaret stands as a powerful symbol of hope and survival. Having conquered aggressive leukaemia and overcome a cascade of life-threatening complications, she has reclaimed her life. After months of intensive treatment, she is now stable, healthy, and ready to return to her home country, Zambia.

With the joy of reuniting with her family and the dream of resuming her nursing profession, Mumba looks forward to a new chapter filled with purpose and promise.

A Testament to Modern Medicine and Courage

Mumba’s journey reflects the transformative power of modern medicine and the unwavering commitment of the KIMS Oncology Department. The dedication of the haematology and stem cell transplant teams, combined with the extraordinary courage of this young nurse, secured her future. Her story proves that courage knows no limits—and that with the right treatment and steadfast hope, even the toughest battles can be won.
