In line with Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi’s call for students to “spend one day as a scientist,” the Department of Health Research (DHR) and the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) organised a nationwide open day—S.H.I.N.E. (Science, Health and Innovation for Nextgen Explorers)—on 7th and 8th August 2025. The event took place across ICMR institutes and DHR-Model Rural Health Research Units (MRHRUs).
Massive Student Participation Across States
As reported by pib.gov.in, the initiative drew 13,150 students from grades 9 to 12, representing more than 300 schools across 39 districts in 16 states and union territories. By welcoming students into its facilities, ICMR aimed to introduce them to health and biomedical research, showcase its contributions to national health, and inspire careers in science and public health—contributing to India’s vision of a Viksit Bharat by 2047.
Leadership Emphasises Scientific Temper and Youth Engagement
Addressing the students, Dr. Rajiv Bahl, Secretary, DHR & Director General, ICMR, described the initiative as “a unique effort to ignite scientific curiosity, foster innovation, and inspire the next generation of health researchers.” He encouraged students to observe, question, and immerse themselves in scientific exploration. “Today is not just a visit, it’s an invitation to step into the shoes of a scientist. Engage with our scientists, explore the labs, and witness the strides India has made in medical and health research. This is how we shape a Viksit Bharat—through curiosity, evidence, and ambition,” he said.
Interactive Activities Bring Science to Life
The programme featured guided laboratory tours, research exhibitions, poster walks, video presentations, and live demonstrations of ongoing scientific projects. Students interacted directly with ICMR scientists, learning about their research journeys, areas of expertise, and day-to-day work in public health. To make the experience engaging, organisers introduced a mascot, Dr. Curio, as a friendly guide throughout the day.
Showcasing India’s Public Health Achievements
Students also viewed four specially curated short films highlighting ICMR’s major initiatives:
- The development of Covaxin, India’s indigenous COVID-19 vaccine
- The iDRONE initiative for innovative healthcare delivery
- India’s efforts towards TB elimination
- Vishanu Yudh Abhyas, a nationwide mock drill for pandemic preparedness
A Day of Scientific Inspiration and Tribute
The 8th of August also marked the 104th birth anniversary of Dr. Vulimiri Ramalingaswami, a pioneering Indian medical scientist, pathologist, and former Director General of ICMR. His enduring legacy added depth and significance to the celebrations.
Reaffirming Commitment to Future Scientists
Through the S.H.I.N.E. initiative, ICMR reaffirmed its dedication to cultivating scientific curiosity among young learners and raising awareness of the critical role research plays in advancing public health. The event successfully blended education, inspiration, and hands-on experience, leaving students with a lasting impression of the possibilities within science and healthcare.
