India Hosts First-Ever ISDE Conference, Marking Major Leap in Esophageal Cancer Care

Shri Nandamuri Balakrishna inaugurated the prestigious ISDE India Edition 2026—an international conference on esophageal cancer—at The Westin Hyderabad, Madhapur. Notably, India is hosting this conference for the first time, marking a significant milestone in the country’s growing influence in cancer research and clinical excellence.

The two-day event, scheduled for April 10–11, is jointly hosted by the International Society for Diseases of the Esophagus (ISDE) and Basavatarakam Indo-American Cancer Hospital & Research Institute (BIACH & RI). Moreover, the conference coincides with the Silver Jubilee celebrations of BIACH & RI, highlighting 25 years of dedicated cancer care.

Global Participation and Knowledge Exchange

The conference has brought together over 150 oncologists from across the world, including experts from Canada, Singapore, Japan, Australia, and the United States. Alongside them, leading Indian clinicians are actively contributing to discussions, thereby fostering a rich exchange of global and local expertise.

A Landmark Moment for India and BIACH & RI

Speaking at the inauguration, Shri Nandamuri Balakrishna described the occasion as historic. He emphasized that hosting the first Indian edition of ISDE, alongside celebrating the institution’s Silver Jubilee, represents a powerful convergence of two milestones.

He highlighted that for 25 years, BIACH & RI has remained committed to making world-class cancer treatment accessible to all. Furthermore, he noted that the institution integrates research with clinical practice, ensuring that evidence-based care provides patients with the best possible outcomes. He added that the hospital continues to balance innovation, training, and compassionate service as a non-profit organization.

Conference as a Catalyst for Innovation

Balakrishna further stated that the conference would go beyond presentations and serve as a platform for transformative ideas and collaborations. He stressed that India now plays a pivotal role in global oncology, driven by its vast clinical experience, skilled professionals, and strong research capabilities.

As per press release, the event is expected to spark innovations, challenge conventional approaches, and foster collaborations that will shape the future of esophageal cancer treatment.

Understanding the Burden of Esophageal Cancer

Esophageal cancer remains an aggressive and often underdiagnosed disease. In India, the burden is particularly high due to risk factors such as tobacco use, alcohol consumption, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), poor diet, and, in some regions, consumption of very hot beverages and malnutrition.

The disease shows rising incidence in states like Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, with higher prevalence reported in the North-East and Kashmir. Treatment approaches include surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and advanced targeted or immunotherapies, supported by innovations in diagnostics and minimally invasive techniques.

Looking ahead, she stressed that India stands at a defining moment in oncology, with the potential to lead through its clinical volume, talent, and willingness to learn from diverse patient experiences.

Leadership and Institutional Excellence

Dr. T. Subramanyeswara Rao described the conference as a defining step in strengthening India’s global position in esophageal cancer care. He emphasized the importance of collaborative learning to address regional variations in disease treatment.

Dr. C.S. Pramesh highlighted the role of strong leadership in shaping institutions like BIACH & RI. He noted that the hospital’s continued success reflects visionary guidance and a well-built, self-sustaining team.
