India’s Plan to Take Ayurveda Global

The government is preparing a major push to expand Ayurveda’s presence worldwide. The proposed roadmap focuses on creating a global ecosystem through research, education, regulation, and international partnerships rather than only promoting Ayurvedic products.

The plan includes setting up Ayurveda centres at prominent global locations, introducing Ayurveda courses in foreign universities, and creating a global registry of practitioners to help qualified professionals work internationally.

Moving Beyond Wellness to Healthcare

The strategy aims to position Ayurveda as a recognised healthcare system instead of limiting it to wellness and lifestyle practices. The government wants to strengthen global acceptance by improving quality standards, supporting scientific research, and encouraging international collaborations.

As per ThePrint, the roadmap also draws lessons from the global expansion of Traditional Chinese Medicine, where strong investments in education, research, and regulatory systems helped build international recognition.

Strengthening International Recognition

The roadmap recommends creating digital platforms for practitioner credentials, expanding academic partnerships, and working with international organisations to improve Ayurveda’s acceptance. It also suggests combining Ayurveda with yoga and meditation to promote India’s traditional knowledge systems globally.

Addressing Key Challenges

However, expanding Ayurveda worldwide will require overcoming several challenges. These include limited international licensing opportunities, differences in regulations, gaps in research evidence, and low insurance coverage.

Therefore, the roadmap highlights the need for stronger scientific studies, globally accepted standards, and improved training programmes to build trust and wider acceptance for Ayurveda across countries.
