With schools across Kerala preparing to reopen after the summer vacation, the Kerala Drugs Control Department has launched an innovative campaign to raise awareness about drug abuse among children. The department is distributing special name-slips carrying anti-drug messages, Health Minister Veena George announced on Saturday.
Creative Approach with Celebrity Caricatures
As reported by The Week, the department has designed the name-slips with caricatures of popular movie stars and sports personalities, making them appealing to children. Each name-slip features a compelling anti-narcotic message alongside the artwork. As students regularly handle their textbooks, these slips aim to reinforce the message multiple times a day.
Support from the Education Department
The General Education Department is actively supporting the campaign by helping distribute the name-slips in schools. Minister George emphasized that the initiative seeks to instill awareness about the dangers of drug abuse from an early age.
Building on Past Success
This is not the first time the department has used creative name-slips for public awareness. Previously, it rolled out name-slips promoting awareness of Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) in Alappuzha district. That campaign, also targeting students, was well received. Inspired by its success, the department has replicated the strategy for its anti-narcotics mission.
Strengthening Drug Control Measures Across the State
In addition to the school-based campaign, the Kerala Drugs Control Department is intensifying efforts to curb substance abuse and the misuse of prescription drugs. The department recently carried out statewide inspections to detect the illegal use of drugs in gyms and to prevent their misuse.
A Comprehensive Fight Against Drug Menace
Minister Veena George reaffirmed the government’s commitment to combating drug addiction and promoting responsible medication use. Through creative outreach and strong enforcement, the state aims to protect the younger generation and ensure a healthier future.
