KIMS Hospitals CMD Dr. Bollineni Bhaskar Rao announced that the group has consistently remained at the forefront of adopting cutting-edge medical innovations from across the globe. He made these remarks at a programme held at a Novotel hotel in the city to mark the launch of a Spine Robot, introduced for the first time in the Telugu states.

A New Era of Precision in Spine Surgery

Highlighting the significance of this milestone, Dr. Bhaskar Rao stated that spine surgeries demand the highest level of precision. Until now, no hospital in Telangana or Andhra Pradesh had deployed robotic technology for spine procedures. By introducing the Spine Robot, KIMS Hospitals has ushered in a new era in advanced spine care, setting new benchmarks in surgical accuracy and patient safety.

Warm Welcome and Programme Opening

Earlier, Chief Robotic Joint Replacement Surgeon Dr. Anne Sai Lakshman formally welcomed the dignitaries and guests attending the launch event, setting the tone for a landmark occasion in regional healthcare.

Advanced Robotic Technology Explained

Subsequently, Senior Consultant Neurosurgeon and Head of the Neurosurgery Department at KIMS Hospital, Dr. Manas Kumar Panigrahi, detailed the technology behind the Spine Robot. Manufactured by US-based Medtronic, the robot will be installed at KIMS Kondapur Hospital.

During the procedure, surgeons take a CT scan and feed the data into the robotic system, allowing them to pre-plan screw placement and determine the precise extent of bone cutting required. The robot then assists in fixing the screws with an accuracy of 99.9 percent. As a result, the risk of screws touching adjacent nerves or causing nerve damage is virtually eliminated, ensuring safer surgeries and faster recovery for patients.

Building on Robotic Success in Orthopaedics

Meanwhile, KIMS Sunshine Hospital MD and Chief Joint Replacement Surgeon Dr. A.V. Gurava Reddy noted that robotic systems have already delivered exceptional accuracy in knee replacements and other orthopaedic procedures. By extending robotic technology to spine surgeries, KIMS Hospitals has added another historic chapter to medical innovation, he remarked.

Transforming Paediatric Spine Care

In addition, Consultant Minimally Invasive Spine Surgeon at KIMS Kondapur, Dr. K. Srikrishna Chaitanya, highlighted the benefits of robotic surgery for children with spinal disorders. He explained that conditions such as spinal deformities and hunchback require absolute precision, which robotic assistance consistently delivers, thereby improving surgical outcomes in paediatric patients.

Rare Technology Now Available in Telangana

As per the press release, Consultant Neurosurgeon and Minimally Invasive Spine Surgeon at KIMS Hospital, Dr. B.V. Savithr Sastry, pointed out that robotic spine surgery is currently available at only four or five centres across India, with none in Telangana or Andhra Pradesh. Therefore, introducing this advanced surgical robot at KIMS Kondapur Hospital is a moment of pride, as it enables the delivery of the highest standards of spine care to patients in the region.

National Experts Laud the Initiative

During the programme, Dr. Soumyajit Basu, Head of the Spine Surgery Department and Director of the Spine Fellowships Programme at Kothari Medical Centre, Kolkata, also addressed the gathering. He congratulated the KIMS Hospital management for bringing such state-of-the-art technology to the Telugu states.
