KIMS Hospitals, Thane Saves Life of 2.5-Month-Old Infant After 35-Minute CPR

On July 14, 2025, 2.5-month-old Mast. Hanzal Shafiuddin was rushed to the emergency department of KIMS Hospitals, Thane, in a life-threatening state. The infant presented with prolonged seizures and altered consciousness, which quickly progressed to respiratory distress and cardiac arrhythmia.

Swift Critical Care Response

The expert pediatric team at KIMS immediately intervened. They performed defibrillation to correct the arrhythmia. When the child went into cardiac arrest, doctors executed a 35-minute cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) before successfully reviving him. Following resuscitation, the pediatric team shifted the baby to the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) for ventilatory support, inotropic therapy, and other critical care measures.

Multidisciplinary Treatment Approach

Over the next several days, the team managed the infant with a comprehensive treatment plan. They initiated anti-seizure therapy, treated pneumonia, and administered antihypertensive and bronchodilator support. They introduced physiotherapy to address limb weakness caused by hypoxic-ischemic changes observed on MRI. Step by step, the child responded positively and entered a stable recovery phase.

Promising Signs of Recovery

Currently, the baby is hemodynamically stable, gradually weaning off respiratory support, and responding well to physiotherapy. Sharing insights on the case, Dr. G. M. Shanbhag, Consultant Pediatric Intensivist, KIMS Hospitals, said:
“Cases like these are extremely rare and critical. It was a race against time, but our team was determined to do everything possible to revive and stabilize the child. The baby’s resilience, combined with coordinated medical intervention, is leading to a promising recovery.”

Adding to this, Dr. Jaykishan Tripathi, Associate Consultant – Pediatric Critical Care, remarked:
“After 30 minutes of CPR, the risk of neurological impairment is always high. But this little one is truly our miracle baby — within just 2 weeks, he recovered completely, started breastfeeding, and resumed normal activities.”

Continued Care and Follow-Up

As per the press release, the infant’s family remains closely connected with the pediatric team for ongoing follow-up care. His recovery journey highlights not only his resilience but also the strength of KIMS Hospitals’ pediatric critical care infrastructure and clinical expertise.
