KIMS Hospitals, Thane has achieved a significant milestone by successfully performing a Minimally Invasive Cardiac Surgery – Aortic Valve Replacement (MICS-AVR) on a 65-year-old morbidly obese woman weighing 95 kg (BMI 41). The patient had multiple comorbidities, including metabolic syndrome, hypertension, diabetes, and obstructive sleep apnea, making her a high-risk surgical candidate.
Diagnosis and Surgical Decision
The patient was incidentally diagnosed with critical aortic stenosis during evaluation for a planned bilateral knee replacement. Recognizing the urgency of the condition, she was advised early valve replacement. After learning about KIMS Hospitals’ expertise in advanced cardiac care, she approached the institution for treatment.
Under the leadership of Dr. Saumya Sekhar Jenasamant, Consultant Cardiothoracic & Vascular Surgeon, the surgical team decided to perform the procedure through a minimally invasive mini sternotomy approach. This technique, known for reduced trauma and faster recovery, was selected to minimize surgical risks given the patient’s complex health profile.
Overcoming High-Risk Challenges
Performing cardiac surgery on a morbidly obese patient involves numerous challenges, such as increased risks of intraoperative complications, wound infections, prolonged ventilation, and delayed ambulation. Despite these potential hurdles, the surgery was completed smoothly and without complications.
As per the press release, the patient’s postoperative recovery was carefully monitored. With multidisciplinary coordination and precise management, she recovered steadily and was discharged in stable condition after a successful recovery period.
Surgeon’s Perspective
Sharing insights from the case, Dr. Saumya Sekhar Jenasamant, Consultant Cardiothoracic & Vascular Surgeon at KIMS Hospitals, Thane, said:
“This case demonstrates how minimally invasive techniques can significantly improve outcomes even in high-risk patients. Managing a morbidly obese patient with multiple comorbidities is always challenging, but with precise planning, advanced surgical approaches, and strong ICU teamwork, we achieved an excellent result. I am deeply thankful to my anaesthesia, perfusion, nursing, and intensive care colleagues for their proactive support. Our focus remains on expanding the scope of minimally invasive cardiac procedures to benefit more patients in the future.”
Advancing the Scope of Cardiac Care
This successful procedure reinforces KIMS Hospitals, Thane’s commitment to advancing cardiac surgery through innovation and expertise. By leveraging minimally invasive techniques, the hospital continues to ensure safer outcomes, reduced complications, and faster recovery for even the most complex and high-risk patients.
Through continuous investment in technology, training, and teamwork, KIMS Hospitals aims to make cutting-edge cardiac care accessible and safe for a wider group of patients in the future.
