Doctors at KIMS ICON Hospital achieved a major medical breakthrough by successfully treating a life-threatening pancreatic abscess using a minimally invasive endoscopic procedure. Notably, they avoided the need for open surgery, ensuring faster recovery and reduced risk for the patient.

Patient’s Condition Worsens Over Time

The pancreas is an extremely sensitive organ, and complications can escalate rapidly. In this case, a 44-year-old patient from Visakhapatnam suffered from severe abdominal pain for nearly two months. Initially, doctors at a local hospital diagnosed him with acute pancreatitis and administered standard treatment. However, his condition gradually deteriorated.

As time progressed, a large collection of pus formed around the pancreas. Consequently, the patient developed persistent fever, intense abdominal pain, vomiting, and difficulty in eating, which significantly affected his quality of life.

Advanced Diagnosis at KIMS ICON Hospital

Seeking better medical care, the patient approached KIMS ICON Hospital. The medical team promptly conducted comprehensive investigations, including blood tests and a CT scan. Based on these findings, they identified a large infected pancreatic pseudocyst.

Breakthrough Endoscopic Treatment

To address the condition, doctors opted for a minimally invasive approach. Using Endoscopic Ultrasound (EUS) guidance, they performed a precise drainage procedure. During the intervention, they placed a metal stent, which enabled the safe removal of nearly one litre of infected fluid (pus) from around the pancreas.

As per the press release, this advanced technique eliminated the need for conventional open surgery, which typically involves longer recovery times and higher risks.

Rapid Recovery and Positive Outcome

Following the procedure, the patient showed remarkable improvement. Within just two hours, he resumed oral intake. Moreover, his abdominal pain reduced significantly, and doctors discharged him within 48 hours, highlighting the effectiveness of the treatment.

A Step Forward in Pancreatic Care

Doctors emphasized that traditional surgical methods for such conditions usually require extended hospitalization and recovery. In contrast, this case demonstrates how EUS-guided minimally invasive techniques can effectively manage complex pancreatic disorders while minimizing patient discomfort and downtime.
