Motherhood Hospital Doctors Remove Football-Sized Uterine Fibroid

In a rare and unexpected case, 51-year-old Mrs. Rima (name changed), a homemaker and mother of two, was found to have a massive uterine fibroid nearly the size of a football. Despite its weight of 3 kilograms, she remained completely unaware of the growth, assuming it to be an asymptomatic condition. Doctors at Motherhood Hospital, Kharadi, safely removed the fibroid, giving her a new lease on life.

Initial Signs Ignored Due to Lack of Discomfort

As per the press release, the discovery began just two months ago when Mrs. Rima noticed a slight bulge in her abdomen. Since she did not experience any pain or discomfort, she dismissed it as unimportant. However, during a routine health check-up, a general physician palpated a lump and advised a sonography. The scan revealed a startling 20 cm fibroid occupying her uterus.

Medical History Revealed Missed Warning Signs

She was promptly referred to Dr. Madhuri Laha, Senior Gynaecologist and Obstetrician at Motherhood Hospital. Upon reviewing her medical history, Dr. Laha found that three years earlier, Mrs. Rima had experienced heavy menstrual bleeding—medically known as menorrhagia. At that time, doctors had detected a small 4.2 cm fibroid. Given her perimenopausal stage, where fibroids typically shrink, she was treated with uterine curettage and a hormonal IUD to control the bleeding.

Unusual Growth Raises Concerns

“What makes this case truly unusual is that fibroids diagnosed in perimenopausal women, especially when asymptomatic, rarely grow to such enormous sizes,” explained Dr. Laha. She added that the fibroid’s unexpected growth to 3 kg was likely due to a lack of follow-up and regular imaging.

Call for Regular Monitoring and Awareness

Dr. Laha emphasized that this case is a stark reminder of the importance of regular health check-ups, even in the absence of symptoms. “Routine monitoring is essential to catch silent growths like fibroids early, especially in women approaching menopause,” she said.

Thanks to timely intervention, Mrs. Rima has now fully recovered and is enjoying a healthy life post-surgery.
