Neurosurgeons at KIMS Saveera Hospital, Anantapur, have successfully performed a complex six-hour surgery to treat a rare arteriovenous malformation (AVM) in the brain of a 47-year-old farmer, restoring his health and quality of life.

Patient Presents With Sudden, Severe Symptoms

Pakirappa, a farmer from Kanekallu, arrived at KIMS Saveera Hospital after developing sudden, intense headaches and altered sensorium. Diagnostic imaging quickly confirmed the presence of an AVM—a rare vascular disorder affecting only one in every one lakh people. In this condition, abnormal connections between arteries and veins bypass the normal capillary network, putting patients at risk of dangerous internal bleeding.

“AVMs can be life-threatening if untreated, as the swollen veins are at high risk of rupture,” explained Consultant Neurosurgeon Dr. C. Anil. “In this case, the malformation was located near regions responsible for speech and movement, which made the surgery especially challenging.”

Complex Six-Hour Procedure Restores Normal Brain Function

As per the press release, a multidisciplinary neurosurgical team led by Dr. C. Anil and Dr. Murali used advanced microsurgical techniques and real-time intraoperative monitoring to remove the abnormal vessel network safely. They successfully restored normal blood flow and protected the brain’s critical functional areas.

After the intricate operation, Pakirappa recovered rapidly. He regained his speech and mobility and was discharged just five days later, able to return to his daily routine independently.

Importance of Early Diagnosis and Intervention

“Many patients with AVMs remain unaware of their condition until severe symptoms appear,” said Dr. Murali. “Early diagnosis and timely surgical intervention are essential to prevent life-threatening complications.”

Expanding Access to Advanced Neurosurgical Care in Rayalaseema

Until recently, patients needing such highly specialised neurosurgery had to travel to major metropolitan centres like Bengaluru or Hyderabad. The successful outcome of this procedure highlights the advanced neurosurgical capabilities now available at KIMS Saveera Hospital. As a result, residents of Anantapur and the broader Rayalaseema region can now access world-class brain and vascular care closer to home.
