Novo Nordisk launched Awiqli in India for adults with Type 1 Diabetes and Type 2 Diabetes. The new therapy allows patients to move from once-daily basal insulin injections to a once-weekly regimen, reducing the number of injections from 365 per year to 52 per year. Vikrant Shrotriya, Managing Director of Novo Nordisk India, said that 217 patients from India participated in the global clinical trials. He added that India is the seventh market worldwide where Awiqli has been launched. The company will import the product from Denmark for the Indian market. Novo Nordisk said that the global ONWARDS-1 clinical programme demonstrated significant benefits for Awiqli.
According to the company, the once-weekly insulin showed:
Improved HbA1c reduction
Better time in range compared with once-daily glargine U100
The company also noted that Awiqli (insulin icodec) 700 units/mL is currently the first and only once-weekly basal insulin approved for adults with Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes mellitus. The therapy has already received approval in the United States, the European Union and 13 other countries.
Doctors Welcome Convenience but Remain Cautious
While industry experts have pointed to competitive pricing that is comparable with existing basal insulin options, some diabetologists are closely monitoring issues such as hypoglycaemia (low blood sugar), particularly in patients with Type 1 diabetes. “Clinical trials have shown that the once-weekly product can be a good option for people with Type 2 diabetes who do not want to take daily insulin. However, real-world outcomes still need to be evaluated,” informed Dr. V. Mohan, Chairman, Dr. Mohan’s Diabetes Specialities Centre.
What the Launch Means for Diabetes Patients
As reported by thehindubusinessline.com, the introduction of Awiqli could significantly improve treatment convenience and adherence for many people living with diabetes in India. By reducing the frequency of injections, Novo Nordisk aims to make long-term insulin therapy easier for patients who struggle with daily dosing.
