In a significant move for India’s rapidly expanding anti-obesity drug market, Novo Nordisk officially launched its much-anticipated weight-loss drug, Wegovy, on Tuesday. The Danish pharmaceutical company aims to rival Eli Lilly’s Mounjaro, which is already available in India.
User-Friendly Design and Market Availability
Wegovy will be available as a once-weekly injectable using the FlexTouch pen, a self-administered device that eliminates the need for vials or syringes. According to Vikrant Shrotriya, Managing Director of Novo Nordisk India, the drug will reach pharmacies across the country by June 2025.
India’s Obesity Crisis: A Market Ripe for Disruption
With 254 million Indians living with generalized obesity and 351 million affected by abdominal obesity, Novo Nordisk sees India as a priority market. The company is targeting the country’s ₹576 crore anti-obesity drug market, which has grown significantly from ₹133 crore in 2021, as reported by PharmaTrac.
“Obesity is not just a personal health concern—it is a chronic disease and a national epidemic,” said Shrotriya. “We are introducing Wegovy with a state-of-the-art pen device and pricing tailored for India.”
How Wegovy Works: Targeting the Brain’s Hunger Signals
As reported by TOI, Wegovy contains semaglutide, a GLP-1 receptor agonist that mimics a natural hormone to regulate blood sugar, reduce appetite, delay gastric emptying, and improve satiety. Unlike Ozempic, which is used for type 2 diabetes, Wegovy is specifically approved for chronic weight management.
The FlexTouch pen allows patients to dial in their weekly dose, with each monthly pack containing four needles. Wegovy works on brain centers that regulate hunger and cravings, promoting sustained weight loss and offering additional metabolic benefits.
Expert Endorsements for Broader Benefits
According to diabetologist Dr. V. Mohan, “Semaglutide offers not only weight loss but also significant improvement in cardiovascular risk factors and inflammatory markers. In a country like India, where diabetes and heart disease are on the rise, evidence-based therapies like this offer holistic health benefits.”
India-Specific Pricing: Flexible and Tiered
Novo Nordisk has adopted a tiered pricing structure for Wegovy to suit the Indian market. The initial three dosing strengths—0.25 mg, 0.5 mg, and 1 mg—are all priced at ₹17,345 per month, which works out to ₹4,366 per weekly dose. As the dosage increases, so does the price: the 1.75 mg dose is priced at ₹24,280 per month (₹6,070 per dose), while the 2.4 mg full dose costs ₹26,015 per month (₹6,503 per dose).
In comparison, Mounjaro—which uses the dual-action compound tirzepatide—offers more competitive pricing. The 2.5 mg dose costs ₹14,000 per month, while the 5 mg dose is priced at ₹17,500 per month.
Clinical Outcomes: Comparable to Bariatric Surgery
Wegovy has shown impressive results in clinical trials. On average, patients lost nearly 15% of their body weight, with one in three individuals shedding up to 20%. The drug also significantly lowered the risk of major cardiovascular events such as heart attacks and strokes. Additional benefits included improved liver function and reduction in liver fibrosis.
However, medical experts caution that the benefits depend on continued use. Discontinuation may lead to weight regain, and there are concerns about potential muscle mass loss, highlighting the need for long-term monitoring and lifestyle management.
Wegovy vs. Mounjaro: A Side-by-Side Comparison
While Wegovy operates as a GLP-1 receptor agonist, Mounjaro combines GIP and GLP-1 receptor agonism, offering a dual mechanism. Wegovy primarily reduces appetite and delays gastric emptying, while Mounjaro enhances insulin secretion and suppresses appetite.
Wegovy is approved specifically for weight loss, while Mounjaro is approved for diabetes but often used off-label for obesity. In terms of administration, Wegovy uses a FlexTouch pen, whereas Mounjaro is delivered through single-dose vials. Pricing-wise, Wegovy ranges between ₹17,345 and ₹26,015 per month, while Mounjaro ranges from ₹14,000 to ₹17,500.
Looking Ahead
With Wegovy’s arrival, India’s anti-obesity market enters a new era of evidence-backed, user-friendly therapies. As both Novo Nordisk and Eli Lilly expand their presence, Indian patients may soon have greater access to safe, effective, and convenient weight-loss solutions tailored to local needs.
