Patients awaiting liver and bone marrow transplants in Uttar Pradesh will soon have a new ray of hope. Ram Manohar Lohia Institute of Medical Sciences (RMLIMS) is gearing up to launch advanced transplant surgeries by the end of November. In parallel, the institute is also preparing for endoscopic surgeries, while specialised catheterisation labs are nearing completion.
RMLIMS Becomes Third Centre in UP to Offer Transplants
With the introduction of these services, RMLIMS will become the third medical institute in the state—after King George’s Medical University (KGMU) and Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGIMS)—to provide comprehensive transplant care.
Dedicated Infrastructure and Team for Liver Transplants
As reported by TOI, Director Prof CM Singh confirmed that RMLIMS is setting up dedicated units for liver and bone marrow transplants, with essential equipment procurement already in progress.
For liver transplant procedures:
- A six-bed ICU is being established.
- The institute is recruiting seven specialist doctors and ten technical staff members.
- A 35-bed transplant unit will support both adult and paediatric liver transplants.
- The surgeries will be conducted on the sixth and seventh floors of the Super Specialty Block.
- A Delhi-based institution is assisting with expertise and training.
Bone Marrow Transplants to Offer Affordable Care
Preparations for bone marrow transplant surgeries are also in advanced stages:
- A ten-bed unit is being set up specifically for these procedures.
- The operation theatre for bone marrow transplants is almost ready.
- The Department of Blood and Transfusion Medicine will carry out these transplants, particularly for patients with blood cancers and haematological disorders.
Prof Singh noted a significant cost benefit for patients. While private hospitals charge ₹25–30 lakh, RMLIMS plans to offer the procedure at a more affordable cost of ₹12 lakh.
New Era of Advanced Care at RMLIMS
With these upgrades, RMLIMS is poised to elevate its role in providing specialised and affordable tertiary care in Uttar Pradesh. These developments not only reduce the burden on existing transplant centres but also bring life-saving treatments within reach for more patients.
