KEM Hospital in Parel has introduced a new-generation cementless knee implant, marking the first use of this technique in Mumbai. Unlike conventional knee replacements, which use bone cement to secure the implant, the new implant has a porous surface that allows the patient’s bone to grow into it and hold it firmly.
The hospital performed the procedure on 70-year-old Prakash Waigankar, who suffered from severe knee problems that had left his leg bent and caused considerable pain. On August 24, doctors performed a customised left total knee replacement using the cementless implant.
Potential Long-Term Benefits
According to KEM’s orthopaedic department, cementless implants could prove particularly useful for younger and more active patients who may need a durable knee replacement. Doctors believe that cement can loosen over time, whereas the porous surface of a cementless implant allows the bone to grow around it, potentially providing stronger fixation.
As per the Times of India, cemented knee replacement remains the standard procedure, but growing concerns about implant loosening have increased interest in cementless technology, especially for younger patients.
Indian Technology Could Reduce Costs
Although cementless knee replacements have been used more widely in Western countries, the technology is still relatively new in India. Cost has also been a major barrier. However, doctors at KEM believe that Indian-made implants could make the procedure more affordable and help expand access to this technology.
For Waigankar, the results have already been encouraging. Following the surgery, his previously bent knee became straighter and his pain reduced significantly. The development at KEM could therefore pave the way for wider use of cementless knee replacements in Mumbai and beyond.
