Tandem Diabetes Care has announced its plan to integrate its automated insulin delivery systems with Abbott’s upcoming dual-sensor wearable. This advanced monitor is designed to measure both blood glucose and ketone levels, offering a comprehensive tool for diabetes management.
Enhancing Early Detection of Diabetic Ketoacidosis
The new wearable, currently in development, aims to help individuals detect early signs of diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA)—a potentially life-threatening condition common among people with Type 1 diabetes. By combining insulin delivery with real-time monitoring of both glucose and ketones, users could take more informed and timely actions to safeguard their health.
A Step Toward an Integrated Diabetes Management System
According to Tandem’s president and CEO, John Sheridan, “Integrating our advanced insulin delivery systems with Abbott’s future glucose-ketone sensor has the potential to help empower people with diabetes to take faster, more informed action to protect their health and improve outcomes.”
As per Fierce Biotech, the collaboration also includes plans to commercialize a fully integrated diabetes solution, combining Tandem’s insulin delivery technology with Abbott’s next-generation sensor.
Abbott Builds on FreeStyle Libre Platform
Abbott has confirmed that the new sensor will be based on its existing FreeStyle Libre 3 continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) platform. It will maintain the same compact size and remain compatible with Abbott’s digital health tools. Notably, the device received FDA breakthrough device designation in 2022, signaling its potential to significantly advance diabetes care.
Other Players Eye the Technology
Tandem isn’t the only company preparing to work with Abbott’s innovation. Just last month, Sequel Med Tech announced that its new twiist automated insulin delivery system will also connect with Abbott’s dual sensor once it secures regulatory clearance in the U.S.
A recent Fierce Medtech Fierce 15 awardee, Sequel has begun rolling out its twiist system and previously stated that it will also support Abbott’s FreeStyle Libre 3 Plus and Senseonics’ year-long Eversense CGM.
