Three-Month-Old Czech Infant Sees for the First Time After Rare Eye Surgery in Hyderabad

Rare Congenital Condition Diagnosed at Birth

A three-month-old infant boy from the Czech Republic, Baby Imad, has regained meaningful functional vision after undergoing advanced paediatric corneal treatment at the L V Prasad Eye Institute (LVPEI), Kallam Anji Reddy Campus, Hyderabad. He was born with severe bilateral Peters’ anomaly, a rare developmental disorder that causes dense corneal opacity from birth.

Both Eyes Affected, One More Severe

Both of the infant’s eyes were affected by the condition; however, the left eye showed more severe involvement. Following a comprehensive clinical evaluation and detailed counselling with the parents, the medical team decided to proceed with advanced surgical intervention.

Advanced Surgical Intervention and Care

Subsequently, the child underwent bilateral full-thickness corneal transplantation, a highly specialized paediatric procedure. This surgery was followed by intensive postoperative monitoring and a strict medication regimen to support healing and visual recovery.

As per The Press Release, such complex paediatric corneal surgeries require timely execution and close follow-up to ensure the best possible outcomes.

Glaucoma Managed Successfully

As anticipated in severe cases of Peters’ anomaly, the left eye developed secondary glaucoma. The treating team managed this complication with medications and transscleral cyclophotocoagulation (TSCPC), successfully achieving stable intraocular pressure control.

Early Signs of Visual Development

On follow-up examinations, the infant demonstrated improved visual behaviour. He began fixing his gaze and engaging visually, indicating early functional visual development during a critical period of visual maturation.

Expert Insight on Timely Intervention

“In syndromic Peters’ anomaly, outcomes can be unpredictable. However, timely intervention and meticulous follow-up can help establish a clear visual axis during a crucial window of visual development,” said Dr. Muralidhar Ramappa, Paediatric Cornea Specialist at LVPEI. Over the past two decades, Dr. Ramappa has managed complex paediatric corneal referrals from more than 50 countries.

Parents Share an Emotional Moment

Reflecting on their journey, the parents said, “When your child makes eye contact for the first time and smiles, the feeling is indescribable. LVPEI supported us medically and emotionally through every step.”
