A rare viral infection is sweeping across parts of India, leaving both children and adults grappling not only with high fever and muscle aches but also with unexpected symptoms like leg pain and numbness. Medical professionals are urging early diagnosis and timely care to prevent complications.
Children Most Affected: Doctors Raise Alarm
Doctors have reported that children between the ages of 3 and 7 are especially vulnerable. Many parents are expressing concern as young patients exhibit discomfort, pain, and even difficulty walking.
“Alongside fever, many children are showing signs of dehydration, muscle pain, and body aches,” says Dr. Nishant Bansal, Consultant Paediatrician & Neonatologist at Motherhood Hospitals, Noida. “These symptoms are creating a panic-like situation among parents.”
As Per India Today: Symptoms Include More Than Just Fever
According to India Today, this viral infection presents a broader range of symptoms than commonly expected. While fever and fatigue remain typical, many patients are now reporting pain, weakness, or numbness in their legs.
Dr. Bansal urges parents to remain observant and consult a pediatrician if symptoms persist. “If a child struggles to walk due to leg pain or numbness, it’s important to seek medical attention without delay,” he advises.
Adults Also Hit Hard by the Infection
Although children are the most visibly impacted, adults are not immune. Dr. Manjusha Agarwal, Senior Consultant in Internal Medicine at Gleneagles Hospital, Parel, Mumbai, notes that many adult patients have had their daily routines disrupted by leg discomfort and severe fatigue.
“We’re seeing cases of dehydration, diarrhoea, and muscle soreness alongside the more unusual leg symptoms,” she explains.
Symptoms Usually Subside in a Few Days
Despite the growing concerns, doctors stress that the symptoms—especially the leg pain and numbness—are usually mild and tend to resolve within a few days as the fever subsides.
“There’s no need to panic,” Dr. Agarwal reassures. “With adequate rest, hydration, and medical supervision, most patients recover fully.”
Key Recommendations from Medical Experts
Both Dr. Bansal and Dr. Agarwal agree on several key measures to aid recovery and prevent further spread:
- Seek timely medical advice – Avoid self-medicating.
- Stay hydrated – Dehydration worsens symptoms.
- Rest adequately – The body needs energy to fight the infection.
- Maintain hygiene – Wash hands frequently and use masks in crowded places.
- Eat a balanced diet – Nutrition supports recovery.
Vigilance Is Crucial, Say Experts
Doctors continue to monitor the spread and impact of this viral infection. Most believe it could be seasonal in nature, but they caution that early intervention is essential to avoid complications.
For any lingering or severe symptoms—especially those involving mobility—it is best to consult a healthcare provider promptly. Staying alert, informed, and health-conscious remains the best defence.
