Vice-President C. P. Radhakrishnan launched the India Valve Registry during the India Valves 2026 conference in Chennai on September 5. The registry will create a national database on valvular and structural heart diseases and help doctors develop treatment strategies based on Indian patient data.
Building India-Specific Medical Evidence
The registry will collect patient-level information from multiple centres, including clinical details, treatments, devices used, complications and long-term outcomes. As a result, doctors and researchers can better understand how valve diseases affect Indian patients and evaluate the effectiveness of different treatment approaches.
As per The Hindu, Tamil Nadu recorded 2,590 heart valve replacement procedures in 20 months under the Chief Minister’s Comprehensive Health Insurance Scheme (CMCHIS). The State government spent around ₹34 crore on these procedures, while women accounted for 53% of the patients. Nearly half of the cases were linked to rheumatic heart disease, highlighting the continuing burden of the condition.
Focus on Better Treatment
The data also shows that around 80% of the bioprosthetic valves used were manufactured in India. Moreover, one in four patients undergoing valve replacement was below 40 years of age, showing that the disease also affects younger people.
Therefore, the India Valve Registry can strengthen evidence-based cardiac care, improve treatment decisions and support better long-term follow-up for patients across the country.
