The World Health Organization (WHO) has released its first-ever guidance aimed at advancing child-focused dengue treatments. The initiative marks a significant milestone in global efforts to improve care for children affected by dengue, a mosquito-borne viral disease that continues to pose a growing public health threat worldwide.
Addressing an Urgent Need
Dengue cases have increased sharply in recent years, particularly in tropical and subtropical regions. Children remain among the most vulnerable groups, as they face a higher risk of severe illness and complications. Despite the rising burden of the disease, no licensed treatments currently exist for dengue, leaving supportive care as the primary management approach.
To address this gap, WHO has introduced the Paediatric Drug Optimization Process (PADO) for dengue. The framework aims to guide research, investment, and development efforts toward safe and effective treatments designed specifically for children.
Key Priorities for Research and Development
The guidance outlines several priorities for accelerating the development of child-friendly dengue therapeutics. These include identifying promising drug candidates, improving formulations suitable for children, and encouraging greater investment in research.
As per the WHO press release, the recommendations build on discussions held during a WHO-convened PADO meeting in October 2025. The meeting brought together experts to assess current evidence and identify critical gaps in dengue treatment for children.
Strengthening Global Response
WHO emphasized that children require treatments tailored to their specific needs. The organization also called for stronger collaboration among researchers, governments, pharmaceutical companies, and funding agencies to accelerate progress.
Furthermore, the guidance highlights the importance of ensuring equitable access to future dengue treatments, particularly in low- and middle-income countries where the disease burden remains high.
Looking Ahead
By establishing clear priorities for paediatric dengue drug development, WHO aims to speed up the availability of effective treatments for children. The guidance represents an important step toward reducing severe disease, preventing complications, and ultimately saving lives in communities affected by dengue worldwide.
