AIIMS Raipur Completes 100 Robotic Surgeries in Just Four Months

AIIMS Raipur has successfully completed 100 robotic-assisted surgeries within just four months of launching its robotic surgery programme, marking a significant advancement in surgical services in Central India. This milestone reflects the institute’s rapid adoption of advanced technology and its commitment to delivering high-quality, minimally invasive care.

Simulation-Led Training Drives Early Success

As reported by Express Healthcare, the programme is anchored in a simulation-led training framework that ensures safe and effective skill development. Under this model, five surgeons have received structured training on the da Vinci robotic platform, supported by round-the-clock access to simulation modules. As a result, surgeons gained confidence and technical precision before performing live procedures.

Since its launch, the centre has performed a wide range of complex surgeries, including nephrectomy, cystectomy, hemicolectomy, prostatectomy, pyeloplasty, hernia repairs, gastrectomy, hysterectomy, clearly demonstrating the breadth of robotic procedures now available at AIIMS Raipur.

Leadership Emphasizes Patient-Centric Benefits

Highlighting the significance of the achievement, Dr. Ashok Jindal, Executive Director, AIIMS Raipur, said the rapid completion of 100 robotic surgeries reflects the team’s disciplined training approach and focus on consistent quality care. He noted that patients are already experiencing tangible benefits such as smaller incisions, reduced pain, lower blood loss, shorter hospital stays, and faster recovery.

“These outcomes make the overall care experience smoother for patients and reaffirm the importance of building a strong, well-supported ecosystem for the safe and effective adoption of robotic technology,” he added.

First Government Robotic Surgery Programme in Central India

AIIMS Raipur launched its robotic-assisted surgery programme in August this year, becoming the first government hospital in Central India to offer robotic surgery. The initiative aims to expand access to minimally invasive surgical care for patients in Chhattisgarh and neighbouring states.

In parallel, the programme focuses on creating a structured pathway for surgeon training and academic growth. This effort is supported by close collaboration across departments, including General Surgery, Urology, Gynaecology and Obstetrics, Anaesthesia, and the broader AIIMS Raipur robotic surgery team.

Improved Efficiency and Reduced Waiting Times

Dr. Debajyoti Mohanty, Professor and Head of General Surgery, emphasized that the milestone reflects AIIMS Raipur’s growing strength in robotic-assisted surgery. According to him, improved operating efficiency now allows the hospital to manage more cases daily, reduce patient waiting times—particularly for general surgeries—and extend access to advanced robotic care across Central India.

Simulation Training Enhances Surgical Performance

The programme’s progress has been further strengthened by simulation-based training using Intuitive’s advanced simulation platform. This system enables surgeons to progress systematically from basic safety exercises to complex clinical skills.

As a result, surgeons such as Dr. Amit Sharma, Additional Professor of Urology and Renal Transplant, have achieved prostate surgery operating times between 154 and 170 minutes—significantly lower than the global average of approximately 200 minutes.

Rapid Skill Acquisition and Clinical Impact

Reflecting on his experience, Dr. Sharma said that structured training combined with focused hands-on simulation practice made a decisive difference. Within the first 10–15 days, he was able to rehearse critical procedural steps, which strengthened his confidence and preparedness for live surgery.

Driven by the urgency to serve patients without delay, this preparation allowed him to begin operating within just three days of training. Consequently, he completed 52 cases in 90 days, maintaining consistently low console times and high surgical efficiency.

Sustained Focus on Access and Training

Following this achievement, AIIMS Raipur continues to advance its robotic-assisted surgery programme with a sustained focus on expanding patient access and strengthening surgeon training. Through this approach, the institute aims to further consolidate its role as a leading centre for advanced surgical care in Central India.
