AIIMS Raipur Becomes First Government Institute in Central India to Offer Robotic Surgery

The All-India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Raipur, inaugurated its cutting-edge Robotic Surgery Facility, Devhast, in the presence of Shri Vishnu Deo Sai, Hon’ble Chief Minister of Chhattisgarh, and Shri Shyam Bihari Jaiswal, Hon’ble Health Minister.

Advancing Patient Care with Precision Technology

Equipped with the latest robotic-assisted technology, the facility enables minimally invasive procedures with greater precision and safety. As a result, patients will benefit from faster recovery, reduced pain, and shorter hospital stays. Moreover, the centre will function as an academic hub, providing training and research opportunities for postgraduate and resident doctors.

Leaders Emphasize a New Era in Public Healthcare

Speaking at the inauguration, Chief Minister Shri Vishnu Deo Sai highlighted the significance of the initiative. He said, “This is the beginning of a new chapter for public healthcare in the region. By introducing robotic-assisted surgery, we are ensuring timely access to advanced treatment options. I am confident this programme will not only benefit patients but also strengthen our state’s position as a hub for medical education and innovation.”

Hon’ble Health Minister Shri Shyam Bihari Jaiswal underlined AIIMS Raipur’s pioneering role. He noted that the institute has set a new benchmark as the first government medical institute in Central India to introduce robotic surgery, reinforcing its leadership in healthcare, medical education, and research.

AIIMS Raipur’s Commitment to Excellence

Lt. Gen. Ashok Jindal (Retd), Executive Director of AIIMS Raipur, welcomed the dignitaries and expressed gratitude to both the Central and State Governments for their support. He remarked, “The launch of the robotic-assisted surgery programme is a significant milestone. It will improve patient outcomes through precision and minimally invasive procedures while also training future surgeons and fostering academic research. Our aim is to integrate excellence in patient care with the development of future-ready surgical expertise.”

Advanced Infrastructure and Training

As reported by pib.gov.in, the centre houses a dual-console da Vinci Xi Surgical System along with simulation platforms such as SimNow, allowing trainees to advance from bedside assistance to supervised hands-on expertise. Initially, the programme will cover surgeries in Urology, General Surgery, ENT, and Obstetrics & Gynecology.

Dr. Dibyajyoti Mohanty, Head of General Surgery and Nodal Officer of the programme, and Dr. Amit Sharma, Head of Urology and Programme Coordinator, shared insights into the clinical applications and benefits of the system.

Recognizing Innovation

As part of the launch, Chief Minister Shri Vishnu Deo Sai felicitated Ms. Jyotsna Kirado, a B.Sc. Nursing student, for naming the system “Devhast.”

Bringing Advanced Care Closer to Patients

With this facility, patients from Chhattisgarh and neighbouring states will no longer need to travel to metro cities for complex surgeries. They will now have access to affordable, world-class treatment locally, marking a transformative step for regional healthcare.
